Amityville School District. Maintain Transportation Infrastructure

Respectfully petition the Amityville Union Free school District Board of Education to maintain the current milage guideline for transportation eligibility. The transportation eligibility guidelines currently in place for the Amityville Union Free School District provide safe and accessible travel for students of all grade levels. This proposition seeks to maintain the existing mileage guidelines to ensure the continued safety, well-being, and accessibility for all students.
We propose that the Board of Education uphold the following transportation eligibility distances:
• Pre-K to Grade 2: 0.5 miles
• Grades 3 to 5: 1.0 mile
• Grades 6 to 12: 1.2 miles
1. Student Safety & Well-Being
• Ensuring reliable transportation minimizes risks associated with long walking distances, including traffic hazards and inclement weather conditions.
• Young children, especially in Pre-K through Grade 2, require shorter walking distances for their safety and comfort.
2. Consistency & Stability
• Maintaining the current guidelines provides families with predictable and stable transportation arrangements.
• Sudden changes to eligibility may cause confusion, stress, and disruptions to family routines.
3. Community Impact
• Transportation access is essential for equitable education, ensuring all students have the ability to arrive at school safely and on time.
• Reducing eligibility distances may disproportionately affect families without alternative means of transportation.
We urge the Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education to maintain the existing transportation eligibility guidelines. These standards support student safety, accessibility, and stability within our school community.
We appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to working together to prioritize the needs of our students.
