Allow students to use Hale Ki Ho'i Ho'i past 6:00 PM

As a student myself I know that it is important for students to have a safe space accessible to us to study in.

Please let the students use the building past 6 pm. These students have been waiting for years to be taught in an actual building and deserve to use this building to study in.

Students need a place to study! Library on lower campus closes at 10pm most days so why can’t the school be open that long?

As an alumnus, I understand the need for safe, productive spaces for students to focus on studies and extracurricular activities. Limiting access to these spaces hinder the growth of the students and the organizations that provide services for the community.

As someone who pursued a graduate degree (JD and LLM) I can attest to the importance of having a place to study on campus.

I’m joining this program next year but it would make a huge difference in my education if the buildings were open longer than 6pm given the fact that I like to study in groups.

Students need reasonable access.

As an alumn who used the mods extensively late at night, the students should be able to have 24 hr access. My tuition was way too high to pay for this to have it be squandered.

As a current P4, I know the 24 hour access to the study rooms and classrooms made my education possible. I understand that there are potentially safety concerns regarding the building and 24 hour access. However, only allowing students to stay until 6 pm does not suffice when most of the MAIN CAMPUS is open until 10 pm. Please take that into consideration.

Alumni here, hope you students get the 24 hour access you deserve and need to be successful. I don’t know the full story, but if the mods are old and moldy then they should probably find an alternative space where students feel safe and have access. If it’s not the new building then where?

As a 2018 graduate of DKICP, my class was promised this new building but it wasn’t realized during my time there - very disappointing. But as a student, having 24/7 access allowed me to complete the program successfully. Without it, there are no resources in Hilo that would’ve provided sufficient access to a quiet study environment for me to pass my classes. The library on lower campus is really the only option, but it also has limited hours. I never once felt unsafe using the mods, even when I stayed until 1 or 2am. For what students pay to be in this program, they have a right to use the facilities to be successful.

During my time as a student I spent countless hours in the mods studying. I couldn't imagine not having that type of access and it's sad that it has to come to this to allow students access to a safe study area. Let them study!

For fear tyrannical retribution, I unfortunately must share what I have to say anonymously. Nothing being shared is confidential or privileged information. I applaud and support my students for standing up for themselves, for standing up to a nonsense policy put into place by Dean Carolyn Ma and Director of Campus Security Rick Murray, that the rest of the college’s faculty and staff do not support. Ever since our students were able to use the college’s modular facilities (I believe 2009) they have always been granted 24/7 access to one of the buildings that houses a few study rooms via an electronic key that could be used to open the entrance doors after the doors had been locked for the day or on weekends. The expectation amongst students was that this same accommodation would be made available to them in the breakout room section of the new building, but that is not the case. During a recent college meeting on Monday, January 13, 2020, faculty and staff were asked, by Carolyn, to come prepared with questions regarding security and access to the new building. At the meeting, Carolyn and Rick presented a plan which included having the new building inaccessible by students outside of a set of Monday-Friday only building hours that end shortly after the last class of the day finishes. The reasoning given was for security and safety issues. Numerous questions and concerns were posed by various faculty and staff members present asking why students were not being provided the same 24/7 access that they used to have. I applaud our student services staff member that led the discussion in support of 24/7 access for our students and handled it professionally and with clearly explained reasoning, even while Rick and Carolyn could not do the same. Please allow the students at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy to have the the option of studying in their building. This is not only crucial to the education of the current students, but also for the wellbeing of the members of the communities in which they will ultimately serve. I humbly support this petition.

This is a joke right? This a not a staged building. It's for the students... we all paid for it. Let them study!!!
