Dear Singing Angel Alumni and Parents,

The Singing Angels were a safe haven for all of us when we were children. From the band members to the athletes, from the popular to the nerdy - we all found a common place where all those labels were wiped away and we were one united group known as the Singing Angels.

During the 90's, an '86 graduate of the Singing Angels, Joe Morin, became our Music Director. He was an instrumental part of our experience with the Singing Angels during this time. He taught us how to perfect our sound and bring out the best in us. Unfortunately, he was abruptly dismissed in the late 90's/early '00 and there was a lot of controversy surrounding the dismissal.

As many of you know, it is the 50th anniversary of the Singing Angels. There are many events surrounding this celebratory year. All the great Music Directors of the past were invited back to conduct, all but one, and that was Joe Morin. So many people, including Joe, were shocked by this and sadly, many people may not attend the festivities because they feel so strongly about this.

We are asking each one of you to take the time to consider signing this petition to ask the current board to reconsider asking Joe to come back and conduct at Spring Concert. We have heard that the show is set and that it cannot be changed at this point, but there is always a disclaimer at every program that the 'Program is Subject to Change'. Let this be the opportunity for things to be made right and for the olive branch to be extended. If the Singing Angel board members choose to pretend that Joe did not exist, then most of the 90's didn't exist and that is wrong. Joe is not only a former Music Director, but a fellow alumnus. It would be like our brother not being invited to our family reunion.

Let this be OUR opportunity to 'Make a Difference' as we have already 'Made Music' and 'Made Friends'.

Thank you for your time and consideration!

Updates

May 4, 2014

The feedback I have received from alumni confirms that the impact of Joe Morin on our collective experience remains significant. I am currently reaching out to the board to ensure they understand the depth of support for his inclusion in the anniversary program.

The momentum behind this request for Joe Morin to return continues to grow as the anniversary festivities approach. It is clear that the legacy he built with the Singing Angels remains etched in the memories of the community.

As parent of an Angel, and one of the chaperones on the Ireland/Scotland tour, and someone who now lives near Joe, I know him well. I can not think of a more suitable person to have been a role model for my daughter and all of those Angels in her class. This is a travesty, and a huge black smudge on the whole Angels organization...they need to act on what they preach -- diversity and inclusion. You don't bet many opportunities in this world, to right a wrong, please GRAB THIS ONE!

Joe was my conductor at church and asked me to try out for Angels; he then was my teacher and conductor for years! Singing Angels owes Joe more than an apology. His heart and soul and morals were one of the largest parts which shaped my life. I would not be who I am today without Joe as the head of the Angels during my tenure!

Working with Joe as a child was an honor and a privilege. The Singing Angels I knew in the ‘90s was rigorous and political, but Joe had a way of making the long rehearsals bearable. My short tenure in the choir was filled with mixed emotions, and I left soon after Joe's dismissal. Although I have no intentions of ever coming back to see the Angels, I strongly believe Joe should be a part of this monumental anniversary. He was a major contributor and part of the choir from an early age. He has a right to walk up on that stage with his head held high and stand next to his fellow music lovers.

Joe Morin is a model citizen and outstanding person. His banishment from the Singing Angels is ludicrous and criminal. Let justice reign and allow Joe his rightful place in the archives of the Singing Angels and allow him to conduct at the Spring Concert!

Joe's parents are as close to me, as my brother and sister-in-law. I also know of his talent and dedication to her profession. He was being discriminated against. The petition says it right! Without Joe, the Angels would not exist.

I couldn't agree more with this proposal. Joe did nothing but good for my son, Josh, and was a true committed, loyal and talented man. It would be wonderful to see him included once again.
