DLI has proved to improve children academically and socially. There are so many benefits of it that it’s even hard to say in a single post. Being bilingual helps kids to develop critical thinking, creativity, respect and perform better in their other school content. Being a foreigner, I noticed as my own kids learned English faster and better by being in a DLI class. The teachers don’t take American jobs, they always have the priority in the hiring process, however it is hard to find enough people in the USA who can speak another language fluently, have a degree in education and are willing to work in DLI classes.

We need native teachers to keep our DLI programs going strong! Native teachers are essential and irreplaceable to these programs; they help students speak and write fluently, while authentically teaching them about their culture. Please allow DLI teachers to enter our country so that our children, students, and the future of America can have the best opportunity of education and becoming global citizens.

I've been so fortunate to have the dual-immersion program as part of my life. My 12-year-old daughter has been learning Portuguese since first grade, and I've been privileged to teach the English portion in the Portuguese DLI program since 2016. I love it! I love learning the language and about the culture right along with my daughter and students. I've had the privilege of working with multiple guest teachers from Brazil at my school, including three partner teachers over the past 5 years. They've all brought so much goodness and perspective. It's saddening to think of how life would have been different for those teachers and for me if they'd been scheduled to come to school when the borders were closed to them. Please invite foreign teachers to come and enrich our schools!

As a teacher in Dual Immersion, I know the benefits of students learning a second or third language. These teachers from other countries provide not only the language, but they can teach cultural things to our students.
