I would rather Davidson pursue its current course than to circle the right wing sump drain of, say, the censorious and reactionary UNC Board of Trustees, which has already damaged the reputation of the UNC system and diminished its prestige. Davidson cannot remain NE ULTRA with any abrupt lurch to the right.

As a member of the first class of women to be admitted to Davidson, I am heartened to see the push for diversity, equity and inclusion continue. The Class of 1977 broke the tradition and improvements have continued. Change happens from within.

I support freedom of thought and expression. I also believe in academic rigor. Further, I believe that Davidson has become a better place has it has fully embraced racial, ethnic and religious diversity. I support the work President Quillen and the Board of Trustees in that regard.

Please continue your efforts to make Davidson a more inclusive and diverse community. Not only is this the morally right thing to do, but it will also enrich your students' education and their overall college experience. Some of my closest friends at Davidson were immigrants, and I am now an immigration lawyer. We are enriched and inspired by the people we meet and become friends with in college. Looking back on my own experience at Davidson, I have mostly fond memories, but I am saddened when I think of how racially segregated the community felt back then and how little I got to know black students at Davidson. A more diverse Presidential search sets the right tone and leadership priorities for an inclusive and diverse community. -Class of 2000
