Bicycles legally have all the "rights and responsibilities" of Motorized vehicles, to ride where cars can drive, and to take up as much space on the road as is "safe" and "reasonable".

Great idea. But we need even more to protect cyclists.

I was broadsided by a car while riding on the bike path in Kodiak 14 years ago. The driver was looking the opposite direction to merge onto traffic and drove right through the bike path. I was pulling my son in a trailer, and fortunately he wasn't injured. I, however, was knocked unconscious, suffered a broken nose, jaw, shoulder, thumb and leg. I was in the ICU for 3 days. What added insult to injury, though, was when the State Trooper came to the hospital to issue me a citation for not stopping for a vehicle intersecting the bike path. Only in Alaska would there be such an idiotic law that states that vehicles have the right-of-way on bike paths. Reading the ignorant comments on Facebook about this benign "Share the Road" license plate, that roads are for cars and bike paths are for bikes is so yesterday. We all have an obligation to reduce our carbon emissions, as well as our waistline. The cost to the State to build a pedestrian- & bike-safe infrastructure would be recovered recovered in a few years from increased health benefits due to the better access to exercise, leading to the reduction in obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

This is a fantastic idea. I have paid for "share the road" plates in every state I have registered my car, and would like to do so in Alaska as well.

Too many cyclists are being harassed. injured, and killed by motorists who need more education. I hope this simple change will make a difference.
