Sexism comes in many forms, it is not only the extreme cases we hear about in the media--of domestic violence, street harassment, mob assaults--it reaches a wide, mainstream audience in much more subtle ways. Being told to "Be a man" alongside vague social guidelines on how to achieve this status, including being aggressive with your partner, valuing women only for their looks, and placing a gender stereotype on clothing items such as jeans, is a particular form of sexism that touches not only on the wide-reaching stereotypes surrounding women's status in public space, but also addresses the strict social norms that regulate the behavior and mentality of men in Egypt. Birell, who recently released a series of advertisements for their non-alcoholic beer encouraging men to "Be a man" based on a highly sexualized and objectifying standard, is projecting a concerning message to the public that it is okay and normal to separate society into "Men" and everyone else.
We live in Egypt, where, unfortunately, Birell's projection of "manliness" is a reality. However, we believe that starting at the grassroots level to change this mentality amongst our peers and our fellow citizens is the only way to initiate a new level of awareness in society. We encourage everyone to think beyond the witty catch-lines and attractive images that Birell is advertising and delve into the impact of their message: If you're not a "man", then you're a woman, and thus you are nothing.
If you agree that Birell needs to rethink its messaging in its advertising campaigns, please sign our petition.

Seeing so many people stand up against these harmful messages is truly humbling. I never imagined this conversation would grow this quickly or reach this many people. This belongs entirely to you and your refusal to accept these outdated standards.

Birell advertising campaigns have always been sexist and it seems to me like a marketing strategy. I hope this petition can change the mindset of whoever is working on their promotion campaign as they are indoctrinating violence against women and gender disparity by their ads and campaigns.
The worst about this is that it is not a one time thing. This is a repetitive, annual, and determined marketing policy. Homophobia, sexism, misogyny, transphobia..etc. Let alone promoting and glorify harassment, gender violence, and machismo. This is not the first year something like this happens with a big reaction from the public. Yet this company ignores uproar and comes back with worse crap than the year before. Disgusting.
Let us put an end to these ridiculous gender stereotypes, and stop associating certain traits and/or behaviour with one gender or the other.
This is only the most striking example of many sexist advertising campaigns of products as gender-irrelevant such as potato chips and radio shows. Please stop this trend.
Birell adverts are sexist, disgusting and do not represent me in any way! Please take them down and apologise to the public
I reject sexist ads

Its sexist proving that we're a backwards country and feeding wrong ideals into ignorant young men who can afford an education outside the televesion
