This is what the PSC contract should have focused on because it has the greatest impact in my ability to make a living. Nothing else (other than a modest pay raise) matters to me and none of the concessions that the contract listed benefited me in any way.

The 9/6 rule has made life as an adjunct at CUNY a living hell, with the necessity of working at various colleges to earn a living, commuting between all of the schools and juggling all of the resulting chaos . It reduces the quality and efficacy of the work adjuncts can deliver to each school, and adds hours of unpaid commuting time to each day. Allowing adjuncts enough hours to earn a decent living will allow CUNY and its students to get the best that adjunct faculty can give. It makes sense.

I support this petition that calls for a more flexible workload for Adjunct Faculty. The 9-6 rule is not in the interest of adjuncts. It imposes significant limitations on them and has not achieved its intended goal.

Even 9/6 is not 9/6 (15 hours) most of the time, especially with not enough classes and low registrations.
But even if it would be, I would not have enough money for the rent, food, transportation, etc., if I would not not live with my husband. And I even afraid to think about my pension with my income.

The 9/6 rule keeps adjuncts from a living wage. What if an individual teaches has a lab attached to her/his course and therefore has a 4 credit class? Suddenly 9 hours is no longer possible. Most importantly, this is a barrier to the minimal health insurance adjuncts may qualify for if then maintain an hours and semester requirement at the same institution.

The 9-6 rule is not in the interests of anyone. Given that full timers are always given priority in class assigments, they gain nothing in the from this restriction -- on the contrary they too will benefit from flexibililty in allocating teaching hours. I urge full time faculty to support this measure in the interests of the students, who as always are the highest priority.

Changing this rule asap will ensure that the adjunct line receives great support. This change in the rule is literally the difference, for many of us, between teaching and having enough food to eat. The struggle is desparately serious. Many of us have families to feed, mortgages long due, and eviction notices. Some of us are homeless. Tuh! Imagine that! A homeless adjunct. How absurd! This on top of teaching a student population also in need of our services and expertise. Change the rule today! Do not wait. For perhaps, the next president of the United States may never be because the Instructor had to choose between a MetroCard and eating for the day. One cannot starve to death, right? A day off, to eat. Can't teach!
