(Please note that we adjuncts do not earn "salaries"--we earn wages, paid at a per-hour rate multiplied by course contact hours.) I support the proposed alternative to 9/6, but of course pay parity would be even better. MF

While the original purpose of the 9-hour limit is good (if the college needs more, they should hire a full-timer!), it doesn't seem to have had that effect, and (as the petition says) causes hardship for those who are stuck as permanent adjuncts.

Being allowed to teach more hours at one campus one certainly cut down on the bouncing around from campus to campus.

I love my job and working with the CUNY student body! However, I am often forced to be underpaid because I am assigned to 4-credit class, or cannot find classes at alternate campuses. A more flexible workload will increase the standard of productivity and fairness on campus and will help CUNY retain their fabulous instructors!

Among other things, it is effectively a form of enforced penury. I routinely have to turn down courses and end up barely scraping by on the income given the existing contractual limitations.

This is a big problem I am facing now, I work in QCC,QC, and Hunter College, and I need to spend more than 5 hours on bus or train every day.

The adjunct workload restriction undermines the financial welfare of instructors. Rather than prevent exploitation, the restriction only makes us waste time and money on commutes from one campus to the next. Instructors end up losing even more time in holding unpaid office hrs because they are bound to teach no more than one class in one of the campuses where they work. Not to mention that in practice, it is nearly impossible to achieve the 9 classroom contact hrs limit.

Adjuncts and students benefit if adjuncts do not need to commute among campuses to earn a living wage. The reality that most CUNY courses are taught by adjuncts is not going to change. We should not be penalized by our own union: please do not force us to commute to survive.

Thanks, And it would be great to see a movement to define parity in the contract with an incremental goal toward moving to parity path - equal pay for equal work.

Most Adjuncts, including myself, earn below minimum wage due to the current limits set on workloads. negotiating conflicting work schedules between campuses, and which often is not in favor of the Adjuncts, makes the matter worse. Shuttling between two or more campuses each semester to teach a course or two is a very frustrating and exhausting experience. The worst scenario, is when you are assigned one or two classes and before the first day of classes, you're informed that the classes are no longer there for you. Indeed, I have gone through some semesters without a course a teach. The financial stress Adjuncts experience year after year has to end. The CUNY administration, including the Chancellor are living comfortably while the Adjuncts who are bearing the brunt of the work of dealing with our students, are living in poverty. This is very unfair, and must change. We all have families to support and we live in the same cost-of-living environment.
