Adjuncts for a More Flexible Workload

It is impossible to maintain liveable conditions on the pay we currently make, with the limit of hours we are allowed to teach. It is exhausting to worry constantly whether or not I will have enough money to pay rent every month, and whether I need to get an additional part-time job to make ends meet. It is humiliating and lacks dignity that we instructors have to suffer these conditions of running back and forth between campuses and additional low paid jobs.

I am affected by the workload restrictions of adjuncts at CUNY, because I got over the hours that I am allowed to teach in the summer. Now, I will have to wait for some of my pay until the fall and possibly the winter semester. I am supporting the alternative to 9/6 rule as suggested in this petition.

Allowing adjuncts to teach 15 hours per semester would certainly benefit adjunct faculty across CUNY. It is mentally challenging and laborious to be teaching in multiple colleges.

Every CUNY Adjunct would benefit from this equitable provision, and the CUNY colleges would benefit as well from this flexibility. There has been unequal pay for the same work (full-time and part-time) for years now, and this dichotomy is increasing. 1) Voting NO on the contract by every Adjunct / Part-time Faculty member is the only option, AND 2) bringing this formal petition to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) by the PSC legal Counsel is really essential at this point !!

YES! The raise that we got was a help, just barely, but combined with lifting the 9/6 limitation we might be able to pay our rent! !!!

This amendment to the 9/6 rule would greatly help out adjuncts. I currently teach at 3 colleges (1 CUNY and 2 private) just to make ends meet. It is very hard to get a convenient schedule this way and the travel becomes a nusense. It is unfair that we adjuncts have to undergo such working conditions just to make a living.

Allowing adjuncts to teach more hours at one campus would make their lives a lot easier and help them financially.

I have had to work at 3 CUNY campuses across the boroughs. I strongly support this adjustment for a more flexible workload. Thanks,

More than 9 hours would be a dream. So would being able to collect unemployment during the summer. I can't pay my rent, yet I'm not collecting unemployment because I was offered a job in the fall. Four months without pay.

Indeed, the Adjunct Faculty have been subjected to unfair and unreasonable hardship, and they are often treated with little or no respect despite their qualifications and the extra efforts they make just to secure their teaching contracts.

More flexible workload

I currently work as an adjunct and many campuses want adjuncts to be loyal and show up to meetings and workshops as well be available to students outside of each course but oftentimes because we're running from campus to campus we are unable to truly do our jobs. Even with PhDs we are still subject to adjunct rules and oftentimes there is no incentive to get a PhD for lack of full-time positions. This sort of unstable working situation is why many adjuncts burn out. Something must be done to ensure that the foundation of many campuses be substantiated.

This is common sense, does not change the general agreement of adjunct hours, and makes it easier to live in an increasingly expensive city.

Adjuncts carry much of the teaching and grading work load. We need to be given more flexibility of work hours and compensation for the hours we work outside of the classroom grading, preparing and meeting with students.

Calling for a more flexible workload for Adjunct Faculty! Since we are paid less - we need to teach more classes!

Also what about the adjuncts that are only ever given 1 course? There needs to be a separate adjunct union!

Any improvement to the 9/6 rule (this petition provides an excellent way forward) should be accompanied by a suitable pay raise that can begin to address the poverty wages being paid to adjuncts under the previous and current contract. It is unacceptable to simultaneously limit the amount an adjunct can work, while also severely underpaying those adjuncts for the hours they do work.

As a 10-year CUNY adjunct, being able to do most of my course load would make things a little more bearable financially and give me some extra prep and grading time.
