I'm in favor of greater flexibility, but only if the university offers something in return, namely higher pay for adjuncts.

This is a fair and thoughtful solution to a problem that has plagued CUNY adjuncts for a very long time and which has only been made worse thanks to the expansion of contact hours in many core classes. Nice work. I wholly support this.

It's about time. Splitting a class between two instructors to get under the 9 hour rule always seemed to be awkward for the students.

I think, perhaps more than just getting more flexible workload options, the CUNY should be retain "full-time" adjuncts as full-time faculty, if they have been serving system-wide within CUNY for more than 5 years, holds a terminal degree, and has completed at least 1 peer review publication. It is ridiculous that a "full-time" adjunct cannot be hired by CUNY as a full-time adjunct. We need to push for a new classification title "full-time" adjunct faculty for those who have been serving at several campuses for years, have terminal degrees, and publication(s) and who work "full-time" as teaching faculty. I am sure many people here would be candidates for these well deserved promotions.

I currently teach at two CUNY campuses and this change would make things so much easier for me. The increased income from more classes at each campus would be a significant improvement in my life. The current policy does not allow me to teach enough courses, which mean I have to add classes from other non-CUNY schools (if I can!) to make enough just to pay my bills. Also, if I could teach more on each campus, I wouldn't have to travel so much and could then have more time for my students. I never understood this policy.

The conditions for adjuncts throughout the educational system are deplorable. Article 15.2 makes conditions worse in view of alterations in core course credit hour changes. At a time when conditions even for minimum wage workers are reportedly improving, this provision actually reduces already low incomes of adjuncts. This should have been a non-negotiable point in the recently signed contract.

The Union circulating a petition a while ago to keep the classes at 4 credits instead of 3. At 3 credit I could sign up for 3 classes and make more money if I needed it. Only our Union would have the "balls" to circulate hey were "fighting for us" while they were trying to limit our pay.a petition expecting me to sign that forced me to accept less pay. They would also claim that t

I am currently teaching two classes adding up to 7 credits due to this restriction. Being able to teach another 3 or 4 credit course would help me greatly in financial terms.

CUNY leans heavily on adjuncts to teach their students, and benefits financially from this arrangement. However, the inflexible workload, coupled with the paucity of full-time lines available, makes it extremely difficult for adjuncts to make a living doing this work. A more flexible workload seems to me to be a fair compromise until CUNY is able to offer more full-time contracts.

Adjuncts serve their institutions by implementing novel practices in the classroom. Adjuncts serve their department by testing prototypes for the research of full time faculty. Most importantly, adjuncts serve students by being many and being close with our students, enriching their overall learning experience.
Many adjuncts give of themselves in multiple locations. A flexible workload is a step in the right direction to recognizing the priceless multiplicity of this position.
