Our students can soar if teachers are trained to teach them to read. Once they learn to read in lower elementary they will soar. Letting them get behind kills their spirit because they know they are different. It is easier to learn how to teach them than to let them fall behind and try to catch them up later. Every single elementary school teacher in the US should be trained in simultaneous multisensory instruction to teach all children to read in the general ed classroom.

So many students eventually give up because they are not given the appropriate support. I work as a Reading Interventionist for grades K-8. I have watched as students enter kindergarten with a love of school and a wonderful attitude harden their hearts and start acting out by 3rd grade. Since these students are Low SES, they can't even afford GOW. We need change a.s.a.p.!

As the parent of a high school student now facing reading difficulties - it could have been invaluable to him to have early screening, teachers with good awareness and intervention abilities.
