As a middle school reading teacher, literacy specialist, and parent of a child who struggles with dyslexia, I support early detection and intervention to empower struggling readers.

This is so important! I am a proud dyslexic and a special education teach who specializes in dyslexia! Not until I left teaching as a special-ed teacher in NY did I learn how to teach reading! Not in college, not in my mastered, surely not in my school districts! The education and experience I have now is all from my wonderful mentor and boss who is a fellow with OG did I learn everything I know. It's scary to see how many children aren't getting the help they need!

School mentioned dysgraphia/dyslexia in my 5th grader but nothing was done. No testing, no interventions. He's in 9th grade now and no further ahead. We still struggle with the most basic things and schools refuse/can't/won't provide testing or services unless they are mandated to do so. How can these children do well on state exams without any intervention to improve their language disability? Why is this not a recognized disability in NY when it is in Federal Special Education law? Time to move foward when 20% of the population suffers with this.
