It took the school system 4 years to identify and recognize my son has dyslexia and only after a private evaluation that we paid for. This is 4 precious years where he missed out on key supports to build fundamentals in reading.

The laws must change and recognize dyslexia. Our children are falling behind without this.

My Daughter and I went to the 2nd annual Dyslexia awareness day at the capital to show our support to change what is happening in schools. They are overlooking children who struggle to learn to read and spell at grade level. This has happened to my daughter for three years until I took control into my own hands and we are no longer in a public school who tells us that the DOE does not recognizes dyslexia and I cannot write that on her IEP either. I grew up in Northport Long Island and struggled with Dyslexia my parents had to fight for help for me and now 40 years later I am now fighting for my 8 year old daughter to get her the proper help. Up to 20% of children have a form of dyslexia. If it is noticed early it can be the difference between learning to read along with your classmates or struggling for years trying to catch up. Plus the added issues of low self esteem or feeling dumb. When it only needs to be taught in a different way that would actually benefit everyone. Dyslexic children and adults are smart they just process information differently. 20% of the population have some form of Dyslexia and are being overlooked. Please Support the Dyslexia legislation A.01480/S.02534 Please email your Senators asking them to support this bill Sincerely, Beth Litt-Wahl

I cannot believe this is not yet a part of the IED that obligates the state to do all to teach children
