my son just diagnosed with a reading disability at 13 years old. Are you kidding me. This is sad and t he school won't even call it dyslexia as they don't even recognize it. I am shocked this is really happening to my child in NY state higher education. Really? NY needs a wake up call.school does not even have a reading program. No child left behind big joke. Common Core another joke. You want to make a difference start a reading program all kids can learn from there is a thought. Bitter disappointed out ragged mother.

I have struggled with Dyslexia all my life and I know my daughter has dyslexia as well. I refuse to let my child or any child for that matter suffer the same fate!! The school has no testing for Dyslexia, and that needs to change.

All three of my children have dyslexia and there is so little being done in the school for them!

The evidence has shown that explicit, systematic, multi-sensory (aka Orton Gillingham based) reading programs implemented with fidelity help ALL kids read better! Why are all schools not using proven methods shown to work with all but a very few children. Implemented with fidelity, the OG based methodologies will work for all but a very few children, who then most likely have more serious learning needs. Most students are not reading due to a combination of ineffective instruction along with learning differences; most will learn how to read if a systematic, explicit, multi-sensory approach is used to teach them reading and writing! Please pass legislation to help our children reach their potentials in school!

Our district doesn't recognize dyslexia, nor do they have teachers who are trained to teach dyslexic kids. We had to seek help outside the school, while they ignored her obvious symptoms. I homeschooled her for 3 years while fighting with the school to get her what she needs...she is now back in school, with an IEP that we had to get a lawyer to attain. It is an uphill battle every day, and she still isn't even getting the most basic things, like audio books. My district is huge and I feel there is just no fighting them. There is a school called Norman Howard about 10 minutes from my house that was designed for dyslexic kids...our district won't refer her there despite our lawyers attempts. I don't understand why they ignore dyslexia. FRUSTRATED.

This condition needs to be handled immediately, as Dyslexia can be treated and handled. Out children are our most important resource.
