College Blvd is a four lane traffic way before and after Olathe Northwest. Why not improve College Blvd in front of the High School ?

My granddaughter will be driving on her own to school soon. Something must be done on the traffic concerns College Blvd. The students, parent, teachers, etc safety is at risk.
This is just one reason we are not encouraging our student to drive to school yet.

I signed, with some reservations, because this petition is not specific enough or clear as to whom it is to be presented. Hopefully, this will be presented to the USD 233 Administration and School Board. Reading the comments, I see a consensus based on anecdotal observations that the solution has to do with street modifications and/or traffic controls. While understandable, this conclusion misses the mark.
I began studying this a few years ago and have had some conversations with certain district administrators and written school board members. The first logical step in addressing the serious traffic issues around ONW, which also exist around the other USD 233 high schools, is not expensive street or traffic control modifications. One must analyze the causes of the high traffic volume at high schools during certain times of day. According to USD 233 administration, ONW, as do the other USD 233 high schools, has approximately 1800 students. 1/3 to 1/2 of them are licensed and a high percentage of them drive to school, mostly one person per vehicle. Of the remainder, a high percentage are shuttled in parents' cars or trucks, mostly one student per car. About 1000 cars are entering and exiting each high school daily, most carrying one student each.
95% of the student body of each high school resides within 3 miles of the school. Our high school students are the least fit and healthy group of teens since World War II. They are expected to have shorter life expectance than their parents. There is no logical reason to be operating cars to go only 3 miles, especially for young, healthy individuals. If one is a slow bike rider, this is only a 15 minute bike ride
The real solution is to reduce the traffic volume. Providing effective incentives and small installations should do the trick. Bike racks need to be installed at each high school near each door. Bike lanes need to be provided outward about three miles from each school. This is mostly a relati

The road in front of the highschool should be at least 4 lanes, not including turn lanes. There should also be areas that you cannot turn against/across traffic and ones you can turn across traffic. There's no flow.

The traffic exiting from the school is a disaster! People become impatient and then that's when accidents happen. Put traffic signals in place that become active during hours school begins and school ends.
