For 2016/17 school year, there is once again only 2 classes for our kids, SDS 1 st grade 2016-17 (current Kindergarten year). One class has 21 and the other 22. 22 is the maximum before an aide must be put in for 19.5 hours per week! Hanover recognizes the need for lower teacher student ratio for early years yet out kids are at maximum AND highest in district.

Hanover policy is

Desirable range for K-3 grades is 18- 22 students

Desirable range for 4-5 grades is 21-25 students

Let's come together as parents and go to BOE on 5/17 and voice our concern for a 3rd class. Salem's first grade will have the highest student teacher ratio out of all k-5 grades in all three elementary schools!!!!!!

We the parents are asking our children receive the same level of excellence as other grades in SDS and our other elementary schools in town!

We request a 3rd section to be added to provide a low student teacher ratio during this foundation years of their academic development!

Updates

May 6, 2016

The growth in support signals that our concerns about class ratios are being recognized throughout the district. I have initiated contact with the school board office to request a formal review of the upcoming first grade sections. We are currently finalizing the documentation that outlines these capacity issues for the next board meeting.

My daughter is in one of these classes and 22 kids is way too many for 1st grade. They need more attention than that.

Our children need a third classroom. Many will not get the one on one instruction they deserve.

The difference from 18 to 22 is huge at all grade levels, but especially in the primary grades. This class will always have this struggle as it appears to be the highest class that doesn't max out. A third class is important to these children to ensure they receive the same educational advantages as their peers across the district.
