Accurate Fetal Images Now

Summary Background
Michigan Law requires those intending to obtain an abortion to view images of the fetus, corresponding to their gestational period, prior to being allowed to complete the procedure. The intent of this law is to provide women with accurate information regarding their pregnancy and decision making. However, the images provided are biased. They are color illustrations, and the fetuses often appear larger than is factual and in detail greater than that which would exist for the specified gestational phase. The features of the fetus’ faces in these images are also detailed and expressive in a clear attempt at an emotional appeal. These depictions seek to portray unborn fetuses as babies, rather than fetuses, likely in an effort to dissuade pregnant individuals from terminating their pregnancies.
Petition Text
Our organization, Accurate Fetal Images Now (AFIN), demands that the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), which is currently directed by Nick Lyon, changes these biased illustrations to sonogram images such that women are provided with more accurate information to make an informed decision.
Sincerely,
Accurate Fetal Images Now
