Why is this not as big as it should be? I been working on cars for over 25 years and these con artist mechanics try to get over on me so I know for a fact it has nothing to do with safety. It's all about getting money going i.e. dealerships, mechanic shops, parts stores, tire shops and so on. Besides that about 97% of accidents happen because of people not paying any attention.

If it’s a state requirement, make it only performed by mechanics who are paid by the state and work in a state owned shop with regulated fees.

This isn't just a financial loss. Its time and stress. Often burdening an additional person who has to give you a ride back and forth to a shop. Sometimes you have to miss work.

Absolute waste of time and complete rip off. Having to replace perfectly functioning parts. They've failed me for a working turn signal bulb because the orange paint of the bulb itself had peeled off and the bulb was now clear. They replaced the bulb and didn't reattach the turn signal correctly to the vehicle. The turn signal consequently flew off while driving on the freeway and almost hit another vehicle. In previous years they've failed my vehicle for a tiny crack in one of the ribs of the serpentine belt. Once they also claimed the rear brakes were at %5 yet totally fine the next year after 10k miles.

Get rid of the safety inspection! It is pointless. They fail your car for things like the light bulb in your turn signal being clear instead of orange, the serpentine belt supposedly being worn (they said if it broke you loose power steering and that's a safety issue).

Abolishing Vehicle Inspections I believe that vehicle inspections are just a scam—an easy way for auto shops to make extra money by misleading customers about issues that aren't actually wrong with their cars. You can get your car inspected today and pass, only for your brakes to fail or your brake booster to stop working the following week. Your windshield wiper might break, your door could get jammed, or your headlight could go out right after leaving the shop. Just because a vehicle has an up-to-date inspection doesn't mean that every part is functioning properly. I've seen new cars on the side of the road with 30-day tags and fresh inspection stickers. It's clear that we need to eliminate vehicle inspections altogether.

I'm very displeased with Virginias inspection system. Time and time i've gotten a fail sticker when i knew there was nothing wrong and the shop was trying to get one over on me. I have to drive about a hour to get to a station that's honest and even shows me a issue coming up. I do my own maintenance and stay up top of everything, and any time i've gotten a rejection sticker, i just drive to the shop a hour away and they pass it pointing out no issues while the other shop says i need $600 or so in repairs to pass. I got so tired of calling state police because most of the time, they're busy with something else or can't come out to inspect my car, so i have to eat the $20 and just go to another station. Virginia needs to fix this issue or get rid of it, NH, OH and TX just got rid of there's, it's time we do the same.
