Learning is not a product. It is a process. It is a process that cannot reach it's fullest potential in creating critical and creative thinkers with our current Standards of Learning.
We demand that Standards of Learning be removed and that educators, parents, administrators, and students are consulted on how to improve our educational system--not lobbyists, test-creators, or other officials with little classroom experience.

The bureaucrats in Richmond are still ignoring us while our classrooms suffocate under these standardized tests. I am tracking every dismissive response from the Department of Education and the list of excuses is growing longer by the day. We are not stopping until they listen to educators instead of the corporate test makers.

The Virginia Department of Education can no longer ignore the groundswell of people who are sick of watching students suffer under these pointless tests. We have built enough momentum to start forcing them to look at what they are doing to our schools. They need to stop listening to lobbyists and start listening to us.

My son comes home crying because of how stressed he is over these tests. Teachers are so burnt out and they dont even get to teach fun stuff anymore. Just bubble sheets all year long. ENOUGH.
the tests are total junk science. they dont show what a kid actually knows they just show who is good at taking tests. my daughter is miserable.
I completely agree. If a student meets the graduation requirements for either a standard or advance diploma and they fail the SOL's, they don't receive a diploma??? It's sickening, but it all comes down to money. The state does not care about the education of our students, all they want is that the schools receive accreditation in order to receive $$. In essence, they are saying that it really doesn't matter if the student has all the credits required for a diploma, if they don't pass the SOL's, oh well, sorry, no diploma for you! What kind of nonsense is that? What are they working towards then? They are saying to the student, they just worked hard for nothing!!! My daughter and I have been stressed out for years!!! It's bad enough that this affects the average student but it's even worse for a student that is on an IEP. Clearly, the student has some type of learning disability to have an IEP so why put them through unnecessary stress for a test that means absolutely nothing! When they go out into the workforce, NO employer is going to ask for the SOL results..they want the high school diploma and a student has the right to receive one if they have met the credit requirements for the courses! Obviously the people making these decisions have no children in school and clearly do not care about the students! As parents, what can we do? It says in the VDOE that parents have the right to have their child opt-out from taking the tests, but then it turns around and also says that if they don't have the (6) verified SOL credits, the child will not have the requirements to graduate and receive a diploma. So parents have no rights because however you look at it, the child has failed!! This is not right and lawmakers should be ashamed of themselves! We have to continue to fight for our children because noone else will.

This is exactly how I feel. S.O.L.s get in the way of our creativity. We do not learn as much as we could and do as many hands on projects as we could because of these test which make the teacher focus too much on teaching us what we need for this dreaded test that just puts more pressure on us as students.
