these type of junctions always cause problems with people racing to overtake or undertake.exactly the same problem on avenue la fleche.

A dangerous junction and there is no need for it to be dangerous as the road is wide enough to have a clear separation of lanes.

What ever happened to the speed cameras that used to be positioned at the junction? The marks are still in the road but the lights have not been there for years. If I remember rightly the lights had a speed limited of 50mph. This combination seemed to work very well so why was it all removed? Lane markings will not work alone, it needs other measures as well. Compitant and respectful driving would also help. A solid barrier separating oncoming traffic is a necessity.

The left lane when approaching the Whitehall turn-off from the Melksham direction should be marked "Left turn only", the right lane should be marked "straight ahead only". This would solve the problem, filter lights would still allow traffic to compete for the single lane.

It really is time to change these markings at the traffic lights. I travel along there frequently and there are plenty of idiots that fly past me then cut in at the last minute. There will be more deaths until this is sorted.

The implementation of the "Left Turn only" and "Straight On Only” road markings is an excellent idea, providing the traffic lights are re-phased to give time ample for more vehicles in the "Straight On Only" lanes to clear the junction. Automatic sensors under the road could also monitor traffic to allow the lights to remain green for the primary main road traffic, as long as no vehicles have approached from either of the two joining roads.
Another option would be to widen the A350 at the approach and beyond the junction for about 200 metres. The two lanes would then be marked "Filter In Turn" with arrows marking this on the road surface. A centre island at kerb height would gradually narrows the lanes into one, guaranteeing drivers would have no option but to filter correctly.
Of the two suggestions the most popular, favourable, and least expensive option is to mark the “Straight On Only” and “Left Turn Only”, with Kerbs installed in front of the Turn Left Only lane to prevent vehicles continuing straight on.
In the final analysis most incidents that have occurred at this junction and elsewhere in the vicinity are simply the result of bad driving. The good driver does not have to be told to filter in turn, or not block a junction, but it's a fact of life that so many are not good drivers. This is why it has to be spelt out in road marking and bollards to filter in turn, or have a yellow hatched box at a junction to remind drivers not to block it.

If Philip Whitehead does not personally think there is a problem he really does need to drive through this junction at rush hour times and see hour people play dodgems with the on coming traffic where people will not let them back in. Regardless of what you are supposed to do drivers on the inside do not like to give way to the outside lane.

Left turn and straight on filters are a must here. I also believe that the same should be applied on Avenue La Fleche turning into Gladstone Road and onwards on Av.La Fleche. There is not enough room for *merging* traffic nor do many people even know how to *merge* !
Too many accidents and lives lost where a simple, clear road marking system introduced would make a huge difference.
