A Petition for Mandated Cultural Competency Training

I would request that the training also include a module on unconscious bias

Let’s move towards a better future together. I loved my time at IWU and TGOE is about being united as a university. I am hopeful for a positive change in all students.

I am hoping we can find a time to talk about how the future will learn about your generation's activities at IWU. The archives typically collect organization's meeting minutes, summaries of activities and event promotional materials. I want to offer what resources I have access to in the hopes that they can help tell your stories better. If you are interested in starting a dialogue on this, please let me know. I could come to the Multicultural House or we could meet in archives at Ames so you can see what's been done before.

Much needed change at IWU. Greek life sometimes makes campus an unpleasant experience for minorities.

I had experience with cultural competency training where I work in the summer. The place is so important to me and it only made me love it more

This is incredibly important to all students and staff on campus and anyone else they interact with. Please implement this.

A bit of much needed training, never hurt anyone. And promotes the message of our university as well as liberal arts colleges all across the nation.

IWU needs this just as much as the drug/alcohol training and the sex/consent training. Only those who are interested and already fairly culturally competent show up voluntarily. If material for this mandated training is needed, I recommend the book “Microaggressions in Everyday Life: Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation” by Derald Wing Sue as well as the keyword search “cultural humility” to find an article that best relates to IWU’s campus climate and training needs. No one on earth is completely culturally competent—there’s always room for improvement. We all need to learn and grow throughout our entire lives.

It sounds like things are even worse than some of the unfortunate micro aggressions and racial insensitivities we experienced in 1980 not that long after the death of Dr. King. Students were purposely ignorant of diversity and cultural differences and quite happy to remain that way. Sad to hear of this in 2018.
