“TO BETTER NIGERIA is a Nigerian NGO promoting accountability and responsibility in the governance of Nigeria for the purpose of a fair and just society which works for all.

We consider that the constitution enacted by the military government of Nigeria in 1999 is not only flawed in conception but that it is politically incompetent for the multiple problems of our national union and that no piecemeal amendment can make it fit for purpose.

We know that it was hurriedly cobbled together for ulterior purposes by a small covert group in the twilight of military incursion into Nigerian governance. It was not intended and did not in fact address the foundational issues of our national union and neither did it seek the consent of the peoples in whose name it was published. It lacks consent, it does not reflect the wishes of Nigerians nor is it by any other means legitimate as a constitutional device. Nigeria needs a constitution which addresses the many well-known problems bedeviling our great Nation and which reflects the yearnings of Nigerians.

A Nigerian constitution must address political participation and accountability at the most basic levels, self-determination, equity and equal justice amongst other fundamentals.

We demand that the Speaker Mr Femi Gbajamilia along with his counter part in the Senate Mrs Remi Tinubu who represent the people of Lagos, stand up for their constituents as a matter of urgency, and to demand in the federal parliament that a new joint committee of the house of representative and Senate be set up to harmonize the content of the 1963 constitution and various constitutional conferences up to the 2014 conference, with an aim of giving us a fresh constitution, that will eventually come into force via a referendum. We hope that they will do this to justify their election to serve our people and that they will not stand against the people, betray their trust and forfeit their confidence.
