We, my love & her 8 year old girl, met with Erl Happ on his property in Quindalup to inspect his prototype sea container homes. I was initially impressed with his overall plan; the location, in the beautiful natural bush setting amongst the trees; the angled orientation, providing a sense of space and privacy; the external aesthetics, neutral bush blending colour scheme.
On the access track verge, in front of the each structure, was two 1200mm square raised vegetable garden beds, diagonally offset supported on recycled pallets, offering a warm welcome & providing fresh herbs & vegies on the door step. The undercover porch conveniently framed the entrance.
Once inside the dwelling, I was extremely surprised by the sense of space the natural lighting availed. Within his simple, practical, spacious design was a; dining room; kitchen; loungeroom; study; master bedroom; bathroom with shower & composting toilet.
I asked if I could help complete the project so we could have somewhere to live & provide shelter for other homeless family’s.
Erl informed us of the stop work order he received from the Shire of Busselton.
Why would a local community organisation want to stop a man working to provide a solution to the housing crisis on his own land?
What housing crisis solutions is the local community organisation proposing?
Have any of the local community organisation decision makers or enforcers ever experienced homelessness?
We have an abundance of land cared for by good hearted, community minded folk who, need help managing their properties and servicing the farm debt & others of affluence who would like to help the homeless in our rural region.
The Shire has a great opportunity to take the lead by implementing a progressive, sustainable & humane solution to the housing crisis, while actively supporting struggling families on farms & showcasing the naturally occurring philanthropy within their local community.

These tiny home villages would give options for affordable housing for people that can't afford to buy their own traditional home and also help form communities supporting each other.

Interest rates and a lack of available housing are causing heartbreak and stress upon families putting insurmountable pressure on parents, couples, single families and children.
people are struggling turning Australia into a third world nation. As a country, every person needs to have the safety of a permanent shelter, food, water and sanitary solution.
People are living in cars.
If Esperence and other shires are now supporting this model, we implore you to pass this by-law.
If these problems are fixed then it's less pressure on the shires to find solutions when the people are working hard to establish success in this area. Thank you.

Yes, this needs to happen and in other towns. The future needs to be more affordable and allow people to get a foot in the door to finally being able to own their own little home.

This is an urgent matter that requires an immediate solution.
Acknowledge the suffering of many, by addressing this issue more swiftly.
This requires a far more creative, robust approach. One has been presented.

I love living in Busselton but over 80% of my pension goes to my rental.
It's just unaffordable to keep doing this.

The whole system is broken it will take wise and brave government leadership to enact the policies that will begin to rebuild a more equatable and sustainable future . Will they take up the challenge ? Lets hope so
