I think its important to push back against any attempt to balance the state budget by reducing compensation and benefits to public employees. Our costs go up every year, particularly health care. We work as hard as anybody. The state should raise the income tax to pay for the level of services we provide.

There is very little research or evidence that merit pay schemes will make our institution a better or more effective one. There is plenty of evidence that suggests a slow decline of pay rates due to inadequate COLA will do damage to UMass.

Please stay firm with these 3 points as they are very important for all of us. This is why we have a union so we wont get bullied to make concessions on things that we believe in. Thanks for your huge effort to keep our rights in place and not to make compromises that might hurt us.
