Dear Dr. Boone,

We, the undersigned, are concerned parents and residents who urge your immediate action to address the worsening safety of our schools. If we can not create a safe learning environment for our children, what hope is there that we educate them there? We feel the lack of movement and transparency towards a comprehensive district wide, school by school safety plan is unacceptable and requires your immediate attention and action. Specifically we urge:

  1. Conduct the Worcester Public Schools Safety Audit. Given all the incidents at the end of last school and those to begin this new one, it is simply unconscionable that the audit has not been completed and unfathomable that we failed to even put out a Request for Proposal yet
  2. School by School Comprehensive Safety Plans. Work needs to begin now to develop individual school safety plans avoiding cookie cutter, one size fits all approaches. Each school in our City is unique and the safety plans should reflect that and should include the expertise and recommendations of principals, teachers, parents, neighborhood associations and students of age, along with Central Administration, Police, Fire and District Attorney’s office.
  3. Seek and value Public Input. No less than 4 public meetings, one for each quadrant, should be help where you lay out these plans and allow the public to listen, air concerns, and offer feedback before a plan is finalized. Allowing us a voice in protecting our children will certainly lead to better outcomes.

We urge your immediate action on these items and thank you for your time and attention.

Nicola J D'Andrea

WPS Parent and Candidate for Worcester School Committee.

September 21, 2015

I was looking at the screen and just realized how much momentum we have picked up because it actually feels real now. People are finally starting to listen and mention this in passing at the grocery store which is just wild to me since I started this sitting at my kitchen table feeling totally ignored.

Thanks for doing this Nick! It is maddening to see the current administration's lacking sense of urgency, especially when it comes to the safety of our children. I stand with Nick on this issue, and demand that Dr. Boone and the rest of the team get moving with the audits and creating realistic and viable safety plans.

I fully support all requests made in this petition. I share the opinion that Dr. Boone is failing the youth of this city.

The City of Worcester, is spiraling out of control. The fact that our schools contribute to it, is unacceptable. This whole 'school to prison pipeline' garbage, is a laughable concept. So a few bad seeds could end up in jail if the police are in the schools. If any Tom, Dick or Harry pulled the crap these North High students are pulling on the streets, they'd be arrested for A&B no questions asked. Those same principles, should carry the same consequences IN SCHOOL. I'm seriously considering Homeschooling my children.

something needs to be done to protect our children in the schools! If nothing is done I will be sending my child to a school in another town and move out of Worcester.

We need leaders who not only say safety is a priority, but actually take actions to show that safety is a priority.

Our children's safety should be made a number one priority and I am very disappointed in the failure of the current school committee to do so! We need IMMEDIATE action before a staff member or student is seriously injured.
