As an alumnus who valued (and continues to value) the opportunity I had to delve into a wonderful education at UGA, I am truly APPALLED that Georgia's educational system has taken the measure of instituting such irrational and unethical policy. Until this policy is withdrawn, I pledge to spread news of this throughout my circle of influence and speak out publicly against it. I also refuse to continue donations to the university, and will be very proactively encouraging everyone I encounter to do the same. Please re-examine both the rationale and the raw ethics underlying this abhorrent policy.

I earned a BA English, BS math, and BS physics from UGA in 2002, and I have worked in the department of housing and several research labs on campus. At UGA, I currently teach and will complete my Phd in the department of geography this summer. As a long term member of the community of students and scholars at UGA, I ask that the administration honor the values it celebrated recently at the Mary Frances Early lecture by publicly denouncing Board of Regents policy 4.1.6 and insisting that the University of Georgia cannot fulfill its mission with such a discriminatory policy in place. The reputation of this institution and the quality of education we provide are deeply harmed by the exclusion of our neighbors and classmates from this campus.

These Regents Policies, like Georgia's SB-1070 copycat bill, have brought national attention to our state's backwards and knee-jerk approach to addressing issues of racial and economic inequality. The Regents Policies should be overturned immediately and access to higher education should become a top priority of the UGA administration and Board of Regents.
