Re-appointing of Coach Steven Day

Coach Steve is the best and most sincere coach any softball player could have. If he see's potential and effort in a player he will put in the work necessary to help them reach and surpass their goal. If it weren't for him believing in my talent and pushing me to be the best player I could be, I don't think that I would've even made it on a college team. He genuinely cares about his team and any player would be lucky to coached by Steven Day.

It's a shame when personal agendas and politics take precedent and shadow what a great coach Steve really is. His players and many in the Johnston community respect the job he's done. That in itself should speak volumes.

Steve and I coached against each other for a few years and I've known him for many more. When we played each other, his teams were always well coached, competitive, and prepared to play. He dedicates an enormous amount of time, effort, and money in order to help all of his girls become better players and more confident young ladies. It would be a big loss for the players and the program if he doesn't get re-appointed.

Coach Steve has done nothing but do great things for the JHS softball team. He started in my sophomore year and brought our record from 2 wins all season to the third round of playoffs in my senior year. He plays the players that work hard and deserve to be on the field and I have never once questioned his ability to lead us to a win. Without him I probably would not be playing at the college of my choice. It would be a huge loss for JHS if he is not re-appointed.

Steve has run an ASA fast pitch travel organization for the past several years, in that time, I have never received a parental complaint regarding his treatment of his players, or their playing time. I also have never received any complaints from umpires that officiate his team's games.

When dedication, hard work and care cease to have meaning in the world of coaching, I fear for the future of youth sports.

It amazes me that Johnston has to even have a petition to re-appoint Coach Steve. Coach Steve is the best coach I have ever had. He has not only helped me to become the player I am today, but also the person. He truly is dedicated to helping his players no matter what. The fact that he turned down the pay during his first season truly shows that; Coach Steve will help anyone with nothing in return. Without Coach Steve's help I would not be playing softball in college. Not appointing Coach Steve to coach this season for Johnston will be truly detrimental to the team. He plays the best of the best and if you are not willing to put the work in to be that, then do not complain he doesn't play you. There is truly no better Coach that Johnston can have, and if they fail to see that then it's their loss.

I have never seen a coach so committed to his team as Coach Day. As my momma always says "if it works don't change it"!! this goes for Coach Day. Bring him back!!!

My involvement with Steve is through the eyes of a softball umpire. Steve is a consummate coach and does not deserve this. His forced departure is a loss to the players and fans. Other coaches could learn from Steve. This is wrong.

From my experience coaching against Steve he has done an excellent job with the girls on the softball team. I see no reason why he should not be hired back! He works hard with them, seems very positive, and always has good sportsmanship. In my opinion all the qualities you should look for in a coach.

Steven Day is a fantastic coach who actually cares about the team and wants to make sure every player has fun but also has the skill levels to get into colleges that would support their love for this sport!

A great coach, but more importantly a great person who will do whatever he can to help his players. Treat his players like an extended family. Also runs one of the biggest softball tournaments in RI, which brings in a lot of business for local Johnston etc. hotels and restaurants during the summer. The Johnston School Committe should review the facts and reconsider their decision.

It’s unfortunate that political favors determined the statues of a coach and his team. If you every watched or played for Coach Steve you would see that he has a passion for the game and his players. He turned the program at JHS and help turn the middle school program around in a short three years. It’s amazing what he has done on the field but what he has done off the field for players is even more amazing. He truly does everything for the betterment of the team not just a player. He does not deserve the treatment he is receiving. Very little coaches like him left in the world you shouldn’t let him go.

As a parent of a daughter who is now playing on a Division II college softball team, I believe the first one in 8 years from Johnston High School, speaks for itself!
