this is a mess!! the athletic department gets so much money and can do what they want but the theater department is going to get cut?!! smh!!! mess!!!

Love this man. I was one of his first students out of college. He taught me so much and to this day is one of my favorite teachers. So much will be lost with this man's demotion. He means so much to so many in the North community. I beg those making this decision to reconsider.

A huge factor in coming to North High school was because of the theater program there. I have been homeschooled much of my life until my eigth grade year when I auditioned for chamber choir and signed up for Intro to Theater Arts at North High School. During my four short years there, I was involved in five plays, three musicals, and became confident enough to audition for the Des Moines Community Playhouse four times with the ability to perform in the ensemble for two musicals.
One of my most memerable experiences was my sophomore year when my younger sister auditioned for our school musical Annie, and was chosen to be Annie! I got to see my sister every day at practice! But this was not the first or last time that Rixner had deliberately brought kids from the community. Rixner and the "Student Theater Board" put together a workshop for Findley Elementary school with "Wicked the Musical" as the theme. Many highschool students were involved in showing kids new dance moves, teaching them songs, and giving tips on acting and presenting themselves. Not only did he bring in the community, he gave his current students an ablility to mentor younger students.
Mark Rixner was my theater teacher for four years, but he has directed plays with participation from my older sister and brother as well as my younger sister and brother. Being in a play directed by Mr. Rixner is a very memorable experience because of the intence passion he brings to the stage. He talks about us getting involved in the community, which is exactly what we want in college. He drives for excellence, and not perfection. He has worked with the choir department so well that most of the kids involved in theater are also involved in choir.
I am now a freshaman at the University of Minnesota, studying as a Vocal Performance major, with the ability to not only use the performance skills that Mark Rixner guided in me, but I have also have a confidence that he nutured in me. Where would I b

We cannot cut fine arts classes, they are so important to many people. It's taught people to overcome stage fright and do things they thought they never could before. I got into state competition and it is the most wonderful thing I've made so many friends through fine arts. This opportunity CANNOT be taken from students. Thank you.

I was a student at North High, class of 1985, and I was also active in the Theater Arts! I cannot imagine North High without their annual shows, plays and musicals. This HAS TO BE SAVED! Please keep The Arts alive at North High School! Don't reduce Mr. RIxner's hours and keep the students active in theater!

Remember my friends- that the squeaky wheel get's the grease. Stand up and voice your opposition to this. I strongly encourage all of you to call and/or email all school board members AND remember, you have a district representative on the school board that you voted for to represent the Northside! Call her and/or email her and make sure she stands up to the board and voices her displeasure.
