Theatre and theatre teachers offer a safe haven for a lot of students. Taking that away is taking away an environment, the only environment in a high school, where kids can be themselves.

The arts are a necessity in school. Their ties to young artists at Harding and Findley can't truly be measured. He should not be deemed as excess.

Why on earth is this eve an option?? I attended NHS from 89-92 and was active in the Drama Department. Drama was a safe place for me and friends - leave it alone and cut out your sporting budget! Drama was always more successful than our football teams ever were.

Rixner is the soul of the drama department. What the district fails to realize is the more we cut the arts, the worse attendance becomes because maybe these people like to act, or play instruments, or paint, or carve wood.

Where in the world would we all be without people giving of themselves towards the arts? I feel it is a very important field of opportunity for those who derive so much satisfaction experiencing art and love sharing their talents with the world. We all benefit greatly!

Absolutely ridiculous to even think of cutting such an important program to this school. The educational value is extreme. The discipline learned along with the rigors of time management. The ability to hone a craft along with the teamwork taken. The competition. All the things involved in a program such as theatre arts helps with student pride and achievement. Do not do this school and its students a diservice. The hours a theatre arts teacher fives to a school and program comesserate to pay is a bargin.

As a North High graduate (1982) who participated heavily in theatre, I can testify how important that experience was to my future employment path. I've made a 30-plus year career working in the video and live production industry, and many of the lessons I learned in high school theatre are still applicable to my work today. The impact of the arts on high school students is often discounted, but I can personally attest to the huge impact made on my own life.

Drama, Theater, Music, Etc. should be a part of every high schools' curriculum. Where else can the students/young people experiment and try their hand at something so expressive?

Definitely my favorite teacher. Not only does he teach us acting skills but also life lessons. He has put his heart into working for North and for his students. He is the last person that deserves this.

I was a student at North and I was in The Wiz in 1995. Besides being in chamber choir, this was my fondest memory! Students need the arts to keep them interested in school!

This is one program that should not go. Actually none of the Fine Arts Programs should be cut. Cut administration and their salaries first. Many can live on less money than they are paid anyway. Too many of the young people find family ties with these groups and it keeps them off the street, teaches them respect, and makes them responsible for many things. Mark Rixner has worked hard at getting NHS Theater Arts where it is so why chance letting it go??? This would be a huge mistake.

Theatre not only teaches creativity, it teaches cooperation, self-discipline, and most of all self-esteem to all students who participate, who may note be gifted in "core subjects".
When living in Des Moines (and going to school for musical theatre myself), I was able to see a production at NHS that was of very high level quality, especially for a high school.
My niece and nephews love this program, and I truly hope that Mr. Rixner will be provided with full-time compensation for his great work.
