I am writing this comment as a concerned and committed student of the University of South Africa (UNISA), to express my deep dissatisfaction and concern regarding the exclusion of many UNISA students from receiving financial support through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). UNISA serves a vital role in South Africa’s higher education system by providing accessible, flexible, and affordable learning opportunities to thousands of students—many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds and rural communities. The decision to withhold NSFAS funding from eligible UNISA students is not only unjust but also undermines the principles of equal access to education. As a distance learning institution, UNISA students face unique challenges, including the cost of tuition, study materials, internet access, and data for online learning. These costs are often just as burdensome as those faced by students at contact institutions. Denying us financial support places our academic futuresat risk and contradicts the constitutional right to education.
