there is nothing wrong with the name that is offensive. I fought for our great nation and how everything started was from someone rebelling.

I do not see how the name "Rebel" is a slander aganst a race. There are rebels all across the world, south america, Africa, North Korea, the list goes on and on.....so my question to the NAACP is why do you think its a demeaning term or are you just making assumptions?

Leave Byrnes alone. They had to get rid of the mascot years ago, for this very reason. It was agreed that they could keep the name. Let the parents in the district vote on it. Don't let people who have no "standing" decide this. Is everyone just mad because their team can't beat Byrnes Rebels, so they want to hit them bellow the belt. Go home and leave the school alone.

This is their school mascot for God shakes. This isn't theating you. If this is you are beyond pathetic. NAACP needs to mind your business and grow up. What happened in charleston has no ties to Byrnes High School. It's just a mascot!

Rebels is not a racist term. It's a person who rises against the opposition. Which is what the Byrnes Rebels are all about. Going out, playing, having fun, and winning. Both of my children are Rebels, I will stand by Byrnes and the people of D5.

Really naacp? Always have to be going after something cause your offended by it... I'm offended all the time with reverse rasism in ATL but you don't see me crying to my mom about it. How about you actually do something good for your community instead of going after things that always offends you. ( build a house for someone, help clean up litter)...The world would be a better place. QUIT CRYING....

Rebels comes from the nickname of James F. Byrnes - the rebel statesman. Mr. Byrnes was an advocate for education for all students. It is significant that the school was built in the 1950's in the same era of the Hollywood film Rebel Without a Cause. This was a time when the term rebel meant fighting against opposition and oppression. I believe that is still a term any student would be proud to live up to.
To assign a racial significance to the Rebel Mascot for Byrnes would be similar to assigning a racial significance to every Panther mascot because of recent comments by members of the Black Panthers.
