Save the banquets one of the special parts of a grad is the banquet

I don't have kids but I support this petition. If funding is an issue, there are alternative ways to fundraise. If it's a food issue due to the different cultures of the kids, find a new caterer! Most of them can accommodate any food restriction! If it's a venue issue, find a new venue - or maybe even use the school gym or auditorium. Do not take this away from the graduates or their families!

Graduating students should be able to have a grad banquet. It's always been a key part of graduating and it's a very nice time for the family. Taking it away is simply unfair!

Its not like the school board is paying for the banquette.. the students fundraise all year long for this. And something they look forward too.

I am reposting my comments from my facebook page. Thank you for creating a venue to keep this conversation going. -- Yes we are very disappointed in this unilateral decision made by the principals. I believe more parental consultation should have taken place especially with the graduates parents, not just the few sitting on a parent council. The liability issue is a mute point as the facility hosting the event carries any insurance needed to run their venue. Costs associated with graduation can be fund raised or saved. Most parents know that their kids are in grade 12 hence additional costs will be forthcoming. And lets face it one does not have to go if they do not want to. The issue of "which grandparents do we invite" is petty. (see article) I think the rational reported is menial and I think there is more here than meets the eye. I am saddened for our kids who graduate this year and those others who have worked hard, beat some of the odds and made it to this milestone. We have been forced to commend mediocrity by having Kindergarten graduations, grade 8 graduations and even in some cases preschool graduations, But the one big milestone that all kids view as the end to a long many years of hard work is reduced to as minimal celebration and recognition as possible. Shame on the principals, the board and ultimately the Minister of Education for thinking that this would be OK. I noticed in our parent council agenda this week that there is still plans for an on school property October dance. Really, where is the liability there? So much for supporting our future leaders and recognizing a job well done in a way that is meaningful to them. This isn't an "everyone gets a blue ribbon for participating event" these kids earned this, they earned their way to be here and to not celebrate this as a momentous achievement is just wrong. Lets continue to celebrate mediocrity, and give everyone a cap and a gown just to be fair. The Winston Knoll statement under the header reads"

Wake up regina school board your system has sucked since i was in school so glad to see your only getting worse. Education and graduating your students comes before greed of money

I know these online petitions hold no clout to the motivation of anything we want changed. However I am doing it to add my name to a list of people that are affected by this. My daughter graduates this year, as does my cuzins daughter and their friends. I want them to have an amazing send off to adulthood! They, as do all graduates, deserve it! My question..... Why were the parents never asked their opinions of it and the so called "safety" issue?

Don't punish the kids for someone preaching on a soap box. Curb the limos, gowns, tuxes and non essential stuff used to impress and show off and base it on what it should be. The student gratuating!

The removal of the banquet from the graduation ceremonies in the RPS without consultation or discussion is a decision that was poorly considered. Other options, such as consolidation of banquets, cost sharing with attendees, or corporate sponsorship are all worthy of consideration.

Absolutley Ridiculous! Sick to my stomach at what the education system has become and thank my lucky stars that I only have to endure the stupidy of the regina school board for 2 more years.

This will affect us next year year for our grad. 2017 grad banquet please!! Such an important part of graduating!!!

So many people would like the baquet, that's one of the most memorable, most fun memories the grads can make and taking that away doesn't seem right.
