A suburban developer is looking to build a new dual lane drive-through Dunkin' Donuts next to Finkl Academy in Chicago's Heart of Chicago neighborhood.
At a time when pedestrian deaths by automobile are skyrocketing, we shouldn't be introducing more traffic and pollution next to some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Pedestrian deaths by car have increased 78% from 2009-2021. This drive-through would be able to process a car every 20-30 seconds. That translates to a car crossing a sidewalk every ~10-15 seconds, when kids are walking to school.
Heart of Chicago is a dense, walkable neighborhood. This proposed development is out of character with the neighborhood, and would be further deteriorate the quality of life for all nearby residents and directly endanger the lives of students every day.
We are asking friends and neighbors to sign on to say "No Drive-Though Next to Finkl Academy". If a drive-through must be built, there are nearby locations that are not a danger to pedestrians, please build it there. If this site is going to be developed, please give us something that is in the character of the neighborhood, and won't be a burden on students and neighbors.

I have spent my mornings watching the traffic near the school gates and the thought of adding a high volume drive through to this crosswalk is honestly terrifying. Many of you have shared your own alarming experiences while walking your children to class and those stories are keeping me focused on this fight.

Seeing this kind of momentum confirms that the safety of our children at Finkl Academy is a priority for this entire neighborhood. It is clear that we will not sit by while a reckless project threatens the daily walk to school.

There's no way this should be built anywhere near a school. I'm quite sure the developers know this but all they care about is their profits - including taking children's pocket money for the unhealthy food and drinks they're selling. No to this development!
Please prioritize children’s lives over profit. No cars on sidewalks near our schools!

A drive-through business is absolutely dangerous for pedestrians anywhere in a walkable corridor, but especially for children. It's also a poor choice for valuable land use in what could be a pedestrian-friendly environment. Do not allow this business.
