It is insane to think that a test with a multitude of technical issues will add another technical portion for something that actually helps! Paper is essential!

This is horrible for people needing to write down calculations to organize their answers. Also if the scratch paper is on the screen it’s not fair to keep the same test time if it’s going to now take people longer to answer questions.

Scratch paper has saved me from computer systems failure ... I like to keep track on a non digital format and to analyze questions.

As NCARB advisor for my institution and a registered architect and professor I find this rule absurd and punitive. There isn’t any valid point to restricting the tools architects can use to solve problems during their exams. Please reconsider immediately.

The ability to take notes on physical paper during the ARE exams is essential. If scratch paper is going to be eliminated then please increase the time allotted for testing.

If this is anything like paint, which it sounds like, equations will be impossible to solve. Using formulas inside of formulas, using a cursor to paint it in place. I can't read my digital signature let alone a complex formula.

My major concern is this announcement comes without a phasing plan like any other Major change to the ARE has allowed and no preview of the tool replacing physical scratch paper. If I didn’t move up my tests after the announcement, I would be expected to take PPD and PDD, arguably the two hardest exams within the whole ARE, under a completely different set of parameters and rules even though I’m still taking these tests at a Prometric site. Furthermore, no one has received any indication the changes made by NCARB to the ARE have been accepted without risk of disqualification by all governing entities that control actual licensure. Those of us who started 5.0 should be allowed a reasonable time period to complete it without the forced move to 5.1.

Please KEEP the scratch paper requirement. NCARB’s current digital capacity for these exams is bad enough, don’t add another layer of complexity that makes an exam with abysmal pass rates even more difficult.
