so, what happened here? how did the audit go? i will assume most of these 60 parents have volunteered at Manoa to oversee lunch, looking for an update.

My son will not buy lunch anymore. He says he won’t have time to eat or a place to sit. This breaks my heart. Please fix these issues in a timely manner.

There is a substitute lunch aide position available in HTSD. What a wonderful way for someone to get involved in the lunchroom !!

Not all adults are qualified to work with elementary age children. Just because you are a mom doesn’t mean you are trained in child develop and/or qualified to work in a school. Sometimes adults are just as immature as children.

The real problem is that the kids need a voice in the school so the parents don't even have to get involved. There's no democratic process for their voices to speak up (aka student government) other than becoming disrespectful.

Both my daughters have shared very similar concerns with me over the past few years, so we concur with all the statements. What also concerns me just as much if not more is that there isn't a democratic way for student voices to be heard about things like this. I just got a notice for student council for my 5th grader, which I was glad to see, but truthfully, ALL student voices, no matter their age, should have a say and be listened to. My 5th grader has some very concrete ideas for solving the issue. Also - my mother was a lunchroom monitor at my elementary school for 20+ years, so I KNOW how hard it is to listen to noisy kids for 4 hours straight. I am so grateful that someone is willing to do this job - could be the toughest job at the school! God bless anyone who can do that job. Maybe giving noise breaks to the monitors could help?

I don't think the anonymous petition author needs to be blamed for the miscommunication that is happening here- I personally am concerned about the closure of bathrooms as well as the inability to decide on the amount of food one consumes after the first 3 minutes of lunch. I fully acknowledge the logistical issues that may cause these rules to be in place but I asked the question nonetheless. I am concerned that the principal was (according to his conversation with me) unaware of either of these rules that the lunch room monitors seem to be able to articulate as fact... so perhaps this is what's needed to come to a consensus and bring issues to light. We would all be up in arms if our school district wasn't teaching children to read. With 2/3 of American adults overweight or obese I think the food lessons we are giving our children are worth a second look.

I am glad that this petition is going around. My daughter has been saying that the lunch aides are mean or ignore the kids and chat with each other. There is one in particular... This is not right and I really hope the school takes notice.

All kids must be treated with respect, especially by adults in the school setting. The lunch monitors should be reprimanded and fired for harassing even one child.

I really don't think that it is necessary to bash the lunch aides. Some are parents of children in our school and they are doing their job. I have asked my children about the issues raised here and they disagreed with most. The lunch aides have scissors available to help kids open items and the kids aren't allowed to use the restrooms during the last five minutes of lunch. This is to assure that no children are left in the bathrooms when the rest of the class goes back. Every child's version of events will vary so unless you are there and actually witness the events, please stop attacking our neighbors, friends and relatives who are there to do a job.

Both of my kids have been saying the same thing for years! They are scared to raise their hand to ask to go to the bathroom. They are not given enough time to eat and often aren’t allowed to talk to their friends. Group punishments are not fair!!! The lunch ladies embarrass the kids in front of the school if they have a negative balance for too long. Many of the lunch monitors are BULLIES and poorly trained. These are children and should be treated with respect.

My kids refuse to buy lunch because there isn't enough time to eat it after going through the line. My daughter often says that she "didn’t have enough time" to finish her lunch that was packed. I have attached sanitizer to her lunchbox so that she can wash her hands. I'm not sure about the bathroom policies though. I walked to the cafeteria the other day and there were several 2nd graders using the facilities. Although, I have heard similar complaints about the lunch monitors being mean and rude.

My son was given peas & a few celery sticks when his account had $.10 left. This cannot be an actual policy! You cannot deny lunch to a kid because his parents forgot to charge the account.

My child is still in kindergarten, but has high anxiety. I'd love to see an improvement in these issues, as I'm sure it would be hard for him next year.
