Leo Maas

Professor L.Maas is highly educated and deep thinking scientist with a broad outlook. His explanation of “ dead-water effect” for real swimmers and elegant illustrating experiment is the best evidence of the knowledge of practical oceanography. The decision to abolish his position looks like a profound mistake, violating the logic of the science organization and all the laws of common sense.

Leo Mass has made invaluable contributions to Oceanography and and will certainly continue to do so.

Leo is a internationally renowned oceanographer/fluid dynamicist. His contributions to the field of internal waves is significant, and his wider contribution to the education of the next generation considerable. If Leo's position is not safe, very many of his colleagues across the globe should feel deep concern.

Leo Maas has co-advised my Master Thesis some years ago. It is very puzzling to me that NIOZ wants to abolish his position. For those of us who had interactions with him (even brief ones) it is very clear he is an inspiring scientist.

In my opinion Leo Maas is an ideal oceanographer, a master of deep analysis and interpretation of the field data within the framework of his original, ingenious and insightful theoretical developments.

Theoretical work is essential to improve the understading of physical processes, to properly design laboratory and field experiments, and to advance the tools used in applied research and engineering applications

Leo Maas is a top-researcher who plays a fundamental role in ocean research and other applied fields. I cannot believe that his position is in danger.

Leo has acquired international reputation. He still continues very innovative research and I have the highest regards for his scientific accomplishment. I hope NIOZ will retract this unbelievable decision soon.

Leo Maas is a brilliant researcher who produces works of great originality and impact over a tremendous breadth of topics related to the seas. NIOZ would be significantly diminished were it to lose the services of such a highly-esteemed scientist and, in its own interests, needs to reconsider its position urgently.

Leo was definitely far ahead when it comes to internal waves. Cancelling such positions is en-vogue today thanks to our utilitarian administrators and their short-sighted and populistic views.

Leo Maas is a great scientist that has made significant advances to our field. When I met him I also discovered that he is very friendly and encouraging of other scientists in his field.

I have read many of Leo Maas' papers over the years and enjoyed many scientific conversations with him. He has made many significant, innovative contributions and has certainly raised NIOZ's profile. This is a great loss to the community and to NIOZ. I hope NIOZ will reconsider their decision.

Science needs original thinkers like Leo Maas

Firing Leo Maas is definitely unwise. He is a brilliant scientist, who deserves to be offered a decent alternative.

I know Leo Maas for 20 years. He is really brilliant specialist in the hydrodynamics of the stratified fluid. It is pity to hear the decision of Royal NIOZ.

This decision is regretful and detrimental both on scientific and strategic grounds. NIOZ is doing Leo and itself a great and avoidable disservice. Oliver Buhler, New York University.

Leo Maas is a world leading expert on internal wave dynamics in Physical Oceanography. His theoretical work impacts both experimental and field work. For example, his discovery of attractors was pertinent in the recent identification of internal wave resonance phenomena at the Luzon Strait.
