This is unacceptable. Professor Leo Maas has spent a lifetime exceling in scientific research. What message are we passing through to our younger generations if we undermine our best scientists at will? Please give room to good sense and reconsider what is simply an inhumane and cruel decision.

Leo is a brilliant theoretician and inspiring oceanographer, and as such a mentor for many of us. I strongly support this petition and hope that an agreement will be found to allow Leo to continue his original and outstanding research activities.

Leo Maas is a highly inspiring and leading researcher in the physical oceanography community. I fully support this petition.

This is a travesty. Leo has had a long-lasting international impact and promises to continue to do so.

In his inaugural speech "Mare Incognitum", Leonardus Maas asked: "do we know the sea?". I understand better the sea thanks to him !

Leo Maas is a World-renowned scientist known for his contribution in fluid mechanics and theoretical oceanography. He is very productive not only in publications, but as a mentor of many young researcher. Over his career he supervised many PhD, Master and Bachelor students who eventually became well-known scientists.

Leo Maas is a world-class scientist. His theoretical approaches are accessible and highly useful to experimental scientists, of which I am one.

Leo Maas is an excellent scientific with an international stand. He made noticeable achievements during the past years and has contributed greatly to the advance of science in his field.

Leo is incredibly knowledgeable on physical oceanography and more specifically on internal gravity waves, his expertise is recognized worldwide and his inputs are of key interests. If Leo did not introduce me to the historic topic of dead-water ("dealing with internal waves and a moving boat"), I would not have accomplished some great amount of work related to this problem. AND his work and experience on this were experimental!

I fully support what is written in this petition and what has been written by my colleagues. Leo Mass he is a world expert on internal gravity waves and a brilliant scientist in many aspect of fluid dynamics.

He is an authority of internal waves and related topics, and I fully endorse the petition.

This decision is very unthoughtful

Leo Maas is a world authority on internal gravity waves. Understanding their properties is one of the key challenges in oceanography, and Leo is at the forefront of this global effort. I fully support the wording of this petition.

In addition to the text of this petition, with which I wholeheartedly agree, it must be pointed out that Leo Maas is a kind and mild-mannered person, with a profound knowledge of the oceanographic and physical literature, always eager to enter a thorough discussion of a new scientific topic; and that his deeply original work has initiated research extending now far beyond his initial circle of collaborators, in or outside Europe, be that on the topic of wave attractors, that he single-handedly created, or the Lorenz-Maas chaotic model of ocean-atmosphere coupling, among others.

I find this decision both depressing and baffling. I fully support the written statement in this petition.

Leo Maas has made many profound contributions to our understanding of internal waves and their role in the ocean. Numerical models and ocean observations are of little value without the theoretical understanding to interpret them and know what they really mean, and it is such understanding that Leo has contributed. Excluding those who contribute to understanding the bigger picture from a rigorous stand point is a retrograde and short-sighted step.
