Change Request for Lunch Break Time Frames for 12 Hour Employees

I agree with this petition 100%! We deserve to choose when we have our lunch periods and not be punished for being late to our lunch time period when working in the field of nursing.

The current rules are unfair to 12 hour employees. Under these guidelines my employer could require me to take my lunch 3 hours into my shift, leaving me with 9 more hours where I can only get short breaks- not enough time for a meal.

It's my understanding that the break limitations are already waived for Police officers and fire fighters due to the unpredictable and serious nature of the job. Hospital staff should be allowed to determine for themselves the safest time to step away from the patient.

45 minutes for lunch was such a positive for staff morale and requires no additional time from our organization. I agree wholeheartedly that in our ever changing dynamics of our department it is really hard to have fixed meal and break times.

The current rules and regulations regarding lunch breaks for workers working 12hr shifts are currently impractical and unsustainable. Please adjust the unpaid break time parameters to more accurately reflect the workflow and time restrictions faced by hospital employees working 12 hour shifts. Thank you for your time and consideration to this matter.

We cannot leave our patients at specified times for patient safety reasons. Healthcare is unique and must be recognized as such.

Nurses are incredibly busy during the first few hours of a shift. We are assessing, medicating, implementing new orders and now responsible for transports and discharges prior to noon. Adding one more responsibility that takes you off the floor for 30 minutes while your fellow nurses are struggling is not good patient care. We need to change the law so that patient's can be safely cared for and that nurses can enjoy their breaks and lunches.

I am a Registered Respiratory Therapist, bound by the same unrealistic laws that apply to RNs and CNAs. In order to provide quality care to our patients, there must be a change to this ridiculous law.

I agree with this petition

The current BOLI regulations for people Working 8 hours shifts simply doesn’t work for those of us that work 12 hour shifts or more. As reasonable people; I’m sure you can see that placing a blanket law over the working community isn’t fair nor is it effective in the continuum of care for the patients we serve. Your law must be adjusted appropriately and talk into consideration the time of average shifts worked per department.

Clearly change needs to take place. If you are not sure, come visit a 12 hr day or night shift and speak to those who are affected by this rule. Thank you.

I support changing lunch breaks to accommodate 12.5 hour shifts, or offering us the opportunity to sigh a waiver that does not hold our employer liable.

Please excuse my grammar and spelling in comment above. I had 9 hours between meals as a result of the extremely early mandatory lunch time and it has clearly had a negative impact.
