I’m very sorry to hear that this opportunity will be taken away when the district is adding so many other wonderful opportunities for students who aren’t even our main K-12 priority (e.g., preschool and high school students attending early college classes).

I moved to LISD because of its commitment to fine arts, it needs to keep these programs! Over and over again in my professional career, people repeatedly say what they learned in their fine arts classes are the skills they use the most in their careers.

I grew up in school musical theater and went on to a professional musical theater career in NYC. I changed careers when my children were born, but I use the skills I learned in high school and honed in the professional theater every day in my job and in my day to day life. Skills like empathy, improvisation, thinking on my feet, memorization, the ability to switch between skills quickly and deftly, the ability to face my fear and overcome it, ingenuity in difficult circumstances, respect for others, teamwork, leadership, how to stand in the spotlight and still remain gracious to others, how to give and receive support, how to learn by watching others shine, how to analyze problems and find solutions very quickly, how important process is, how to show up when you are exhausted and deliver 100% even in awful circumstances, how to analyze a text and a piece of music, how to express myself with my mind, voice, and body. That's to say nothing of the lifelong friendships I formed. All of these skills I learned in musical theater, and it started in 6th grade, carried through high school and college and graduate school onto the professional stage. If I hadn't had a high school musical theater program, maybe I never would have learned any of it. Keep the musical theater program at Vandy. Our kids need it.

It is a shame that we just funded a huge LISD bond and they said they wouldn’t cut teachers or programs if the tax payers approved that bond and yet here we are, cutting one of the most popular arts programs at Vandy. It’s a shame that this is happening and depriving our children of such a wonderful program. Surely other cost cutting measures could have been accomplished without decimating the entire musical theatre program, ALL 4 years of classes. The musicals pay for the theatre shows and programs, how do they expect that to continue when u cut the very classes needed to learn the skills needed to put on a huge musical production? Vandy administration should be ashamed of themselves for making such a terrible decision.
