In solidarity with my colleagues at Garrett. Search processes should be transparent and hiring is a key way that injustices are perpetuated within academia. This needs to change.

There are so many issues and red flags within this search from the very beginning including but not limited to the fact that a firm conducting the search is where a trustee and co-chair of the search committee worked and that students and faculty were not included. The fact that an “anonymous source” presented who knows what and then that these trustee members offered the position to the second finalist without going through the process is questionable ethically, morally, and theologically.

These students are calling you and the institution to conscience. Will you listen, will you act accordingly, will you pass this spiritual test?

I am appalled by the blatant disregard for the qualifications placed in the initial candidate to be our next president at Garrett and the image of God inherent in her personhood. I am equally appalled by the negligence of the process followed to exclude a woman of color from the leadership of our allegedly progressive seminary and to undermine the work and diligence of the Presidential Search Committee. Furthermore, the presence of our United Methodist Bishop of the Northern Illinois Conference as a Trustee and contributor to this act of violence adds a layer of ecclesial racism and corruption that is beyond heartbreaking to witness in my final days at Garrett-Evangelical. Repent and change your mind, for your actions have maimed the hearts and souls of many, but none more than our students and faculty of color who have placed enough faith and trust in your leadership to only have it betrayed openly and publicly with what is named as a "proverbial lynching." I resolve to withhold all donations now and in the future, until justice is done, the new candidate is reinstated with national independent third-party, and the listed leadership on the Board of Trustees - Trustee Sally Dyck, Trustee Anne Driscoll, and Jerre Stead - are removed and replaced with anti-racist minded individuals.

I implore the Board of Trustees of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary to honor their institutional commitments to anti-discrimination. The sins of the past do not have to be carried into the present and/or future. There is a better way and honoring the institutional commitments to anti-discrimination is the way.

Clarity and transparency are essential to building trust and beloved community. The selection of a new president, comparable in significance to the appointment of a bishop or even supreme court justice, cannot be handled with this kind of rushed, behind the scenes process which reinforces deeply rooted systemic racism and has broken trust of students, staff, faculty, and alumni. None of us who have attended Garrett are surprised, all of us are hopeful that you will choose to do better while there is still time.
