I am a life-long Methodist and a now-retired educator. On both counts I find this unacceptable.

The secrecy and the unilateral action are astounding. They undermine the integrity of Garrett.
Bravo to the students for speaking out and for reporting this to ATS.

There’s a disconnect between the trustee’s perception of the school and the lived experience of the students, staff, and faculty. They’ve said they want to learn, but this decision shows that “listening” and reading the student reports have only gone so far. I expect more from the trustees of this institution that taught us about restorative justice, liberative theology, and toppling harmful hierarchies.

This is unacceptable and very hypocrite. It ruins Garrett’s history and legacy. Otherwise, please remove this phrase from the Mission Statement: ‘ we pursue respect and reconciliation in all encounters.’ They do not respect the student.

You can’t teach us to stand up against injustice and then be surprised when we demand that you uphold the principles you taught us.

Trust in institutions is already teetering between fragile and non-existent. This is when integrity and transparency are especially paramount to an institution’s flourishing. The new president deserves the support of the community they serve; I’m certain that the process Garrett is collectively experiencing will not pave the way for that possibility.

It’s time the institution addresses its systematic internal racism that has prevented an equitable space for learning. These practices need to start.

I understand the outrage, but if I understand correctly, under the United Methodist schools bylaws the resident bishop automatically has a seat on the board of trustees — which means Salley Dick cannot be removed by petition. But I definitely support the second point!
