The systemic racism that has been pervasive in the Canadian school system for several decades is not only immoral, but shameful. This "woman" does not represent our Canadian values. However, it seems like the YRDSB stands behind the use of the n-word by people who cannot even begin to acknowledge their white privilege. Their privilege is the only thing that it keeping them employed. No one can disprove that. Canada. 2017. Disgusting.

FORGET having her RESIGN. FORCE THE BOARD TO REMOVE HER RACIST OLD ASS! HAS A ONTARIO HUMAN RIGHTS COMPLAINT BEEN FILED AGAINST THE BOARD FOR SYSTEMIC DISCRIMINATION and HER?

Racism is inexcusable and will not be tolerated - only then can it be eliminated.

This is egregious behavior unbecoming a public official. It sets a horrible tone for the Board and its employees. Our children deserve better.

It's good that she apologized but she must still resign. You shouldn't have to struggle to remember not to say that word. There's something wrong with your attitudes if it could slip out by mistake under any circumstances.

I do not support racism. Her racist ideologies have been exposed. We need to send the message racism is not tolerated.

The saddest thing is that it is taking so long for her to go, followed by the deafening silence of the other trustees.

YRDSB you all have the right to sanction and suspend her, so exercise that right you were given when you were elected. If you do nothing, we will make sure that your tenure as trustees will be marred in history by this miscarriage of what you have been entrusted to do!

Imagine calling someone the n word and blaming it on a head injury LOL let me just diss my friend and apologies to him and say it was a head injury!

Should Nancy Elgie’s racist comment be seen as a behavioural consequence of TBI, or has her head injury merely served to uncover a latent racial bias long-held against Blacks? Today’s Toronto Star article written by her son and daughter would certainly have you believe the former view. Regardless of how this may or may not have played a role in her unfortunate gaffe, the fact is that her remark has caused damage. And damages require a remedy. Drunk drivers who inadvertently kill others as a result of their impaired faculties are still legally liable for their actions. Similarly, Nancy Elgie should be held liable, especially given her position in the YRDSB, the responsibilities of her role, and the influence her role affords her; and especially given the historically troubled and tenuous relationship between the Black community and the YRDSB. Her resignation or dismissal would aptly serve to demonstrate YRDSB’s commitment to upholding the inclusionary values as maintained in their mission statement.

There is no excuse for Elgie's use of a word that is intended to be derogatory, insulting and slang for a person of colour. We don't tolerate it from a student much less from a school board trustee. Parents and student put their trust in these people. The same way there is zero tolerance for bullying this is exactly that, bullying. To state that the Trustee had a previous concussion is nothing more than an excuse for bad behaviour. If she was recovering from a concussion then she was clearly unfit to conduct her duties and her words were not only hurtful also damaging to the parent and the child and now the community at large. A surgeon would not be able to operate if he was recovering from a hand injury until he is fit to perform his duties. The same applies here. She has proven she's unfit and before there is any more damage she must be removed from the school system. People from far and wide want the school board to act. We will not rest until her removal. We will not let the dust settle in your hopes that it will just blow away. The only thing we want to go away is Elgie gone from the system. A system that is already plagued with racial problems.

Stop making excuses for your disgusting inappropriate behaviour and acknowledge the fact that such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be or should not be tolerated. When one gives excuses for inappropriate behaviour one is saying that one is not responsible for one's action.
