As a former Medical Assistant and hospital patient, I have no words to describe the horror I feel over the shooting of a hospital patient. This must never happen again.

I'm a student with a mental illness and it's already hard enough to go to the hospital, much less when people are being shot there.

There are many ways to prevent a patient from hurting a caregiver. As a small female with many male patients much larger than I am who very frequently get icu delirium, never ever have we attacked a patient. We have needed help to restrain and maintain our safety, but to shoot a patient? That is unheard of an unfathomable extreme action.

I am a retired research hospital administrator and cannot imagine this scenario happening.

The police and the staff involved should be heartily ashamed of themselves. Someone needs to be brought to book for this if a repeat occurrence is to be prevented.

Nurse needs to be dismissed from duty on psych unit, and administration needs to train an intervention team, police are not needed on a psych unit, and they should never bring a gun on a psych unit.

This is disgraceful. In 31 years of practice I have NEVER had to resort to violence with an uncooperative or combative patient. The situation needs investigation and the security personnel (who I understand were moonlighting police officers) need to be held accountable.

It is sad to see that things have to escalate to these levels. I hope justice is served.

We pray that Alan will recover quickly. We pray for his family. My God show everyone His light of peace, as together we seek his guidance to show us the way to effectively speak our collective outrage to make positive change. We are shaken by the St Joseph’s Medical Center's. continued, and unquestionably cruel restrictions placed on Alan's family which have effectively denied access and visitation to thier injured son and brother. We stand in untiy with everyone that protests this injustice.

This is beyond belief. have the Police no training and no heart ?

There are other ways to deal with panicky patients besides emptying bullets into them

One of the sad ironies here is the gunning down of Officer Goforth by a man with a history of mental illness who obviously needed help and if he had gotten it, Officer Goforth would still be alive. Around the same time that this happened, a young man seeks help because he is having a panic attack and is disoriented and an off duty police officer first uses a stun gun and then his police issued weapon because allegedly he is afraid for his life? The young man wound up in I.C.U. and while he is recovering he is charged with assaulting 2 police officers who were acting as security officers? Now the incompetent administrators at St. Joseph and H.P.D. decide to display their already bad judgement by dismissing the fact that instead of getting help, this young man almost died at their hands. To add insult to injury, they have no problem inflicting more abuse on the patient they almost killed by charging him with assaulting public servants who were not acting as public servants? They should never have been allowed to enter a patients room with their police issued weapons and the police have shown time and time again that they do not have the skills or training that is needed in order to help, not hurt, people who are disoriented, scared and are spiraling out of control, which is terrifying. Can only imagine the effect 2 police officers who looked armed and dangerous (and apparently were) had on him.

it makes you wonder who suffers from greater mental health problems.

This is an intricate piece of what has to be fixed. The system, procedures, are unacceptable as is.

I spent a great deal of time in a hospital as a patient, and while I can empathize with an overworked under financed hospital's limited capacity, I believe that hospitals are supposed to be places of healing not violence. We must as health care workers push for more funding for mental health care as it is an issue that faces us everyday as providers. We swear an oath to provide care to EVERYONE and more and more mental health patients are being left behind. I am sure the hospital staff is also suffering from the violence that occurred and my heart and mind goes out to everyone who was hurt. Let us work for justice because it is part of our work as health care workers. The fact that the lives of black people and people with mental health issues are much more likely to be physically and emotionally harmed by the police, makes it a moral imperative for hospitals to reconsider there attachment to armed security guards who are off duty police officers. Unless we push for change now, we risk more violence in the very spaces charged with healing those who have been harmed.

Having worked in a 2PC mental mental health unit I find the treatment of Mr. Pead HIGHLY UNPROFESSIONAL, and heads should role, especially the mental health staff. There are strict guidelines that apply to the treatment of mental health patient, and it appears they were not adhered to.
