Alan Pean- Collective Statement from Healthcare Professionals

I live in Chicago. I am appalled at the medical attention received by so many especially when it comes to mental health. They have closed hospitals across the country and the issue is being ignored. The jail and prison systems are the new mental "health" institutions.

As a Clinical Psychologist who treats people suffering from acute psychiatric crises, I am horrified at the very thought that any suffering patient should be harmed in any way, let alone shot, for the behavior for which he sought help. Horrified.

I'm horrified that this could happen in a hospital. Something radical must happen with police training. It's getting so we don't want to call them for help because they cause more trouble than we already had!

We have got to end this rash of brutality. Our law enforcement officers need better training. When the first answer to every situation is a firearm, there are no winners.

Unbelieveable! This is one of thé most kind, caring and compassionate young man I havé ever met with incredible manners. Being involved in thé Health field for over 20 years, I find thé actions of this hospital deplorable and an embarrassent for anyone who is associated with healthcare.

This is so atrocious and one cannot help wonder if Alan's case would have been different if he were about a young Black male. These so called healthcare professionals should be ashamed of the pain they caused Alan and his family. I pray that Alan will be okay and that justice will prevail

Alan is one of the greatest people I know from one of the kindest and most giving families I've ever met. If this can happen to him, it can happen to anyone.

What a tragically appalling story. Where have we come to in our society where people asking for help are shot in places of healing. Having an intellectually disabled brother, I am horrified to think of what could happen to him in such a setting. As medical professionals we need to stand, unwavering, against such ignorance, injustice and ineptitude. Just as we must stand against other violations of our Hippocratic oath, whether it be psychologists' corroboration with the military in torture techniques, or medical professionals assisting in forced tube feeding or prisoners or administering drugs for executions. We must reclaim our role as healers and protectors of the vulnerable.

You can't do this to sick people. Period. The officer was not properly trained, and apparently has no insight. We have pledged to first DO NO HARM. The hospital may be at fault for allowing this dangerous man near a patient. I have personally been threatened by many patients on a psychiatric unit, but that doesn't change the fact that we have to protect them until they are well enough for their family or the community to care for them in the least-restrictive way. .

DESPICABLE. I'm sooooooooo sick of Americans acting like crazy sissies. Calling the cops on a patient??????? WTF????????????????????? Strap him down for a little bit until he calms down and orients himself, that's what you do. You should be fired for being incompetent. You should be ridiculed for being jackasses. The cop should be fired too. PERIOD. Grow up, America!!!!!!!!!!!!! And pull your damn heads out. Geeeeeeeeeeeezzz!!!!!!!!

I concur with the sentiments in this petition. Allowing a voluntary patient with a severe and acute change in mental status to be nearly killed in a hospital setting by virtue of gross medical negligence/malpractice is inexcusable.

I understand the pressure of an intense work environment,but the treatment of a person with mental health difficulties and their family with such reported contempt is tragic indeed;this should be about learning how to treat people with dignity,diffusing anxiety and supporting people,not alienation,distress,injury

It is absolutely inexcusable for Mr. Pean to have been shot by a firearm within the hospital premises! This incident was and is completely avoidable and the off-duty officer who discharged his weapon into Mr. Pean is a disgrace to all other gun-owners and police officers. All of Mr. Pean's charges should be dropped immediately!

This was the hospital's fault for having the cops to do the job of Pysch Techs/orderlies. Sorry I worked my way through collage and grad school as a Pysch Tech, in both Pysch and on Pysch wards in general hospital. The Charge Nurse on each floor knew who, where and when the biggest beefiest Pysch Techs/orderlies who worked in the Hospital. I am 6'4" and at the time weighed near 200 Lbs and I was one of the smallest of the lot. When a patent was giving one of the nurses a hard time they would call for 4 or 5 of us, to help. You will be surprised how cooperative they got, most of the time, when 5 of us big guys show up, and ask: "you are going to take your medicine for the nice nurse - AREN'T YOU? If the patent got combative we were trained how to take down and restrain them without harming them; Even if we got injured. At no time did any of us have a can of mace, taser, and certainly not a gun.

First of all if it was a locked Psych ward, no one with a firearm should have been on the ward under any circumstances. least of all an ignorant, trigger happy cop. I honestly hope the victim sues for 10 to 20 million, and the Hospital should also sue the police department for an additional 10 or 20 million, total gross negligence and down right stupidity.

Im a certified nursing assist. I'm so sorry for what happened we are here to help people never to hurt I've been helping people for over 18 years. Praying that God continues to bless y'all!

This is HORRIFIC! It is unbelievable that anyone would be treated this way! What I know for sure is that if the color of his skin were different he and his family would not have endure this terrible injustice!

This could have been anyone, there needs to be more accountability on the hospital staff. You can't just go around shooting patients because they are hard to deal with. JUSTICE FOR ALAN!!!

For my 35 years working as a nurse, I've never seen such violence in a hospital that's suppose to be a place we get life back not take life. We don't kill people were suppose to help them in their time of need.
