“To cure sometimes, to relieve often, to comfort always,” Under no circumstance should shots be fired, especially on hospital grounds. We have responsibility to care for anyone who seeks help, and that responsibility should not be on the doctors and nurses, but on everyone who works in the hospital.

This is absolutely appalling. Working in the emergency department, I see patients that are altered mentally and become combative and agitated but at no point do we resort to violence. I am disgusted at this unnecessary police brutality as well as the stance St. Johns Hospital has taken against the Pean's family not letting them see their son. This is not how any human being should be treated and this is not how medicine is practiced. My prayers are with the Pean family tonight.

when patients express themselves with violence and anger- it is often because they have a reason to be angry, are in pain (be it physical or not), and are further hurt, violated, betrayed and not protected by the systems around them. we should respond with care, humility, and respect for their voice and their dignity. the hospital is not isolated from the systemic violence of the rest of this world. we should make our care a sanctuary- protect, disarm, be a neutralizing comfort- and when we fight, fight for our patient's right to be treated (in the hospital and in the world) with goodwill and good intent- as all people deserve. after lifetimes of violence against people of color in america- inequity is the #1 threat to health we face.

I have known Alan since he was in elementary school and is one of my son's best friends. His father is a colleague of mine. This is a great family of our community. My family's prayers are with the Peans.

There has to be more training and methods in the US for dealing with safety and law enforcement. The usual excuse of fearing for one's life could easily be taken for it's dual, namely, the ordinary citizens now fear for their lives. However, I still wish to know why the taser didn't suffice.
