Alan Pean- Collective Statement from Healthcare Professionals

This is not how hospitals, or hospital security, are supposed to operate. If this man dies it will be directly caused by the hospital's negligence.

Mental health issues should not be reacted to with guns, the man needed help not death.

Even though I am not a medical professional, I know that own security staff is trained to deal with situations with, not only caution, but upmost care to not injure a patient that is seeking help.

Shocked by this entire story. Desperately hope that Alan will recover fully and all will learn so that this kind of incident will never happen again.

I am a licensed social worker employed at a psychiatric hospital. The idea this young man would be shot rather than chemical or physical restrained is morally and ethically wrong. The police officer can't be allowed to use street tactics in what is supposed to be the safety of a hospital.

Medical professionals should be equipped to handle mental health issues.

How can a hospital allow any security officer to carry a firearm while on duty? My heart sinks to hear of this young man's misfortune. There should be major changes in the culture and protocols at St. Joseph's Medical Center. This is inexcusable!!

Supporting the incident

I am so upset by this; there is no place for firearms in a hospital! There should be a law against bringing them into hospitals where we are in the profession of healing!!

His father was in the hospital one hour prior to the shooting requesting to speak to another physician and imploring that his son receive better psychiatric care than he was receiving. His father was at his son's side trying to steward him through a delicate time in his life. His father AND mother were there attempting to transfer him for care to another hospital where he could get better care. This hospital was attempting to discharge that same patient, their son, who was in the midst of an acute mental health care crisis. It was when his loving family left his side to try to get care for him that the hospital decided the remedy for a mental health crisis for an ADMITTED patient was bullets instead of treatment. I can assure you nowhere in the medical literature is there anything advocating for a lethal firearm as standard of care for a mental health crisis. Please do not sign this document if you do not believe in its message and take your hateful, uninformed comments elsewhere. Thank you.

I am Alex Zendejas aunt. When I met Alan Pean and his entire family, I was quite taken by the wonderful loving family they are. Alan is a gentle and kind soul. I am outraged by the continued acts of Police Officers' brutality! When will this poor behavior by the Police stop? God bless the Pean family. Give them strength through this difficult time.

Signing for justice

My thoughts and support are with Alan and his family.

I was a unit secretary in the Emergency Department for several years. While I rarely had to call for security or police assistance, NEVER did either of those professional groups shoot our patients!

There are absolutely NO reasons for a gun. Besides tasers, there are masses of people that can take down anyone, no matter how big. However, the hospital has to care enough to make sure their staff are trained in crisis prevention methods. It's not cheap, but no one dies. How awful for this family.

tragic and pathetic that someone who goes to the hospital for help, unarmed and winds up with a projectile in them. I know that police/security forces have been scrutinized as of late, but this is something well worth investigating. This should not be hard. The fact that he went to the hospital means that there is a paper trail...

Son of a doctor. He is no defrent than any body else. Since he was loved were was his family in time of need. Where was his father Slash doctor at the time of need. The need is love and thanks to the men women who protect us from people. that get out hand but you showed your hand of greed in your choice high priced. Lawer!

What were the professionals thinking and doing that a security man would draw his gun, let alone discharge it. Who was in charge of this Code?

As a mental health professional I am outraged by the mistreatment of this young man by hospital security personnel where he was seeking help. Agitation is a symptom, not criminal conduct.

I support the inalienable rights of the patient, which were neglected.
