This is a gross affront to human decency.

Police are trained to deal with criminal situations. They do not belong providing security is medical facilities. They are trained to treat every situation as life or death, and the only lives that matter are theirs. The idea of police responding to situations involving patients of a healthcare facility conflicts entirely with the mission of healthcare providers. The mere presence of police in a hospital setting is likely to dissuade people who need help from seeking it, out of fear that something like this could happen to them. The only time a cop should ever be called to deal with a patient is when that patient is armed and threatening staff and patients. Even then, if healthcare professionals cannot deal with the mentally ill without the use of cops or guns, they don't belong in the field. I am 5'2 and weigh 110 lbs. I can take down a 6 foot tall, 200 lb male without injuring anyone. That is a part of the training when you work with the mentally ill. You cannot just shoot them! This is horrifying.

Cops in the ER...cool. Beyond that, no. Easy to train medical staff in restraint techniques. Try SAMA.

If an ill person can't go to a hospital when he needs help, where is a safe place to go? this is such a tragedy and will deter others from trying to get help.

I'm concerned about using a gun on a patient in a hospital

There are numerous ways of dealing with an agitated patient. None of which involve firearms.

Seeking justice

I am signing this for justice and education. Why does shooting have to become the first option?

This is appalling. A police officer was afraid for his safety....from a patient in a hospital??? I was a supervisor in a county hospital and was involved with psychiatric patient take downs while wearing a dress and high heels...take that officers badge and put him behind bars to think about what he did. How many other people did he endanger by shooting in a facility?

I have never heard of a Firearm or Taser being used to stop a combative patient, Haldol, Valium or Zyprexa yes, but guns? What were they thinking?

I overheard a CNA once say that our security guards should be carrying. I objected then and I continue to object especially in light of what I just read.

As a fellow healthcare professional with knowledge and training in mental health, I believe the measures taken were completely inappropriate for a patient seeking assistance during a mental health crisis. We cry out for JUSTICE! Alan's life matters.
