No one deserve to be dismissed when a concern or problem is presented to a healthcare worker. If the problem is beyond your expertise then inform the person you will pass the information on to someone who can better assist. Never make the decision on your own what is pertinent & what is not.

Police officers that are involved in shootings need to be held accountable for their actions. My prayers are with Alan and his family.

This is completely unacceptable treatment of a patient who required serious medical attention and who only had an altered combative mental status secondary to his illness. These security officers need to be disciplined and taught to demonstrate restraint when appropriately handling combative *patients*. Patients should NOT be treated like criminals! Unbelievable.

I have had to deal with many combative patients, male and female, and patients who have even bitten or otherwise physically harmed staff but NEVER have we had to resort to gunfire, or even tasers for that matter, to eventually have the patient subdued and calm. I do not know the particulars leading up to the event but I cannot fathom a situation in which an unarmed patient would need to be shot in order to control a situation. This is beyond the pale.

The cops in this country have shown repeatedly that they no longer care about the safety of it's citizens.. and then they wonder why WE are starting to shoot THEM..

It would appear that this act of violence was unnecessary, they have many ways of dealing with this type of problem. It would appear there is much needed training. This should never have happened

Years ago, I worked in various emergency departments in the Houston area. Our staff knew that security officers were available if our safety was in jeopardy, but never would I imagine that a firearm would be used in the hospital setting. We were trained in non-violent de-escalation techniques, the most "invasive" being medications and seclusion/restraint. Alan's story shakes me to the core.

This should never have happened. The refusal to allow the parents to speak to his doctor or to provide a psychological exam is in violation of his rights. I hope he ends up owning this hospital, and that those who provided incompetent care are fired!

As a black female student it worries me when I here about the situation. I am working on my undergrad study. I know lot of studying can lead to depression, stress and so on that can cause student to seek for medical treatment. If hospitals are not safe then where can I go to get the help that I need.

Our society seems to want to imprison people, shoot them, leave them begging for mental health care, or just flat let people with mental illness survive with 0 help. This is a public health crisis in our country! It's mind boggling.

My girlfriend was raised by a schizophrenic mother and happened to be good friends with Vester Flanagan. She read the statement for the family and wants to take up the fight for mental health awareness and the trouble friends and family, let alone those themselves seeking help come across.

As a person with an MA in Psychology, as well as prior nursing training, I am baffled and horrified by the treatment this young man was denied. Apparently, this hospital needs more mandatory training on how to treat mentally-ill patients safely and effectively.
