I am shocked an appalled that this happened in a healthcare setting. I've been troubled by this for hours--so long that I can't focus on anything else. The healthcare system failed Alan, and as a healthcare worker, I am deeply saddened and feel a sense of collective shame. How could deadly force even have been thought to be acceptable against an unarmed patient in the throes of a psychiatric crisis? Why was he not properly medically restrained first? Why hadn't steps been taken to prevent the situation from escalating to this point in the first place? May this at least be a tragedy that turns into a story with a moral, so that all healthcare workers gain better training and crisis-control critical thinking skills. Best wishes to all of you as you heal from this terrible incident. Needless to say, the criminal charges should be immediately dropped. If we charged every patient who fights us with assault, our prisons would be even more overcrowded than they already are. That is clearly not any kind of a solution to this already tragic situation.

what happened to Alan Pean is unacceptable. The police take an oath to serve and protect. A hospital should be a safe heaven not a place to get shot.

The only reason one goes to the Hospital is to get treated not to get a bullet in one's stomach, it's outrageous!

It's regretful how a young man could be shot in a hospital.

Why do your security force even have guns. I work in one of the most well known facilities, which includes Adult and Forensic Psychiatry, and there are no guns.

This is unconscionable. There are protocols for managing altercations with individuals experiencing mental health crises that do not involve violence. There is no reason to even have a gun in a hospital. This hospital acted unacceptably and I hope that it and its security staff face appropriate consequences.

I am not a Dr. or nurse.I worked as a substance abuse councilor for many years before retiring. I have dealt with combative patients who were high and or drunk. There is always a way to deal with this ,without violence!

The behavior of the hospital personnel as well as their "guards" is unconscionable. Both the patient and his parents requested specific medical treatment and the hospital refused. What is going on there that they refuse treatment for an obviously I'll patient? As for the "guards", why would they taze and shoot an unarmed patient who was trying to get medical assistance? I want and need answers.
